James W. Conine
88, went to be with the Lord Sunday, June 8, 2014. James (Jim) was born in 1926 in Newton, Iowa, to Ersel and Alice (Wyler) Conine. In 1944, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army. While in the Army, Jim studied engineering at Stanford. After an honorable discharge, he enrolled in the University of Iowa where he earned a PhD in pharmacy. Upon graduation in 1954, Jim moved to Indianapolis to work with Eli Lilly and Co. in antibiotic discovery and development, where his contributions earned several patents for Lilly.
Jim met his wife, June (Curry) Conine, at a singles group at church in 1955. The couple wed in 1956, going on to have four daughters. Jim shared his many interests with his family including carpentry, gardening and travel to destinations important to American history. Following his retirement in 1987, Jim pursued his interests in watercolor painting, reading and travel.
Jim is remembered for his love of poetry, sense of humor, gentleness and humility. He is survived by his wife, June; children, Sandra (Joseph) Tweed, Carol (Daniel) Strange, Janet (Ken) Pensinger, Mary (Dennis) Gifford; and grandchildren, June, Mary, James, Susanna, Benjamin, Jonathan, Andrew, Thomas, Victoria, Dennis and Arden.
Viewing is scheduled for Wednesday, June 11, 2014, 4-8 pm, at Shirley Brothers Fishers-Castleton Chapel , 9900 Allisonville Rd. Memorial services will be held at East 91st Street Christian Church, 6049 E. 91st St., Indianapolis, Thursday, June 12, at 11:00 a.m. with visitation one hour prior.
