Joann Mae Smith Gibson

With great sadness, the family of Joann Mae Gibson announces her death on November 24, 2012. Joann was born on June 6, 1937 to Clyde E. Smith and Edna Mae Smith (Bell) in Jeannette, Pennsylvania. Joann graduated from Jeannette High School in 1956 and graduated from Saint John's School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1959. On May 19, 1961, Joann married Richard Gibson of Jeannette, Pennsylvania. Joann and Richard and their family enjoyed many years living throughout the eastern United States before moving to Melbourne, Australia and Toronto, Canada. They retired to Greensburg, Pennsylvania and Montpelier, Virginia before settling in Indianapolis, Indiana in 2010.

Joann cared for many patients during her career as a registered nurse. She was generous with her time and talents. She enjoyed, gardening, cooking, traveling, reading and politics. Joann's greatest love was spending time with her family, particularly during their many vacations to the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Joann is survived by her husband of fifty-one years, Richard, two daughters, Carrie Gibson Doehrmann (Derek) of Speedway, Indiana and Lynn Gibson Taucher (Tim) of Wexford, Pennsylvania and four grandchildren (Molly and Sam Doehrmann and Jack and Beck Taucher). She is survived by three siblings: Gloria Welhofer of Delmont, Pennsylvania, Edward Smith of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Clyde 'Gene' Smith of Montpelier, Virginia. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Joann is preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Edna Smith.

A memorial service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on December 1, 2012 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Speedway, Indiana with the Rev. Jeffrey Bower officiating. Conkle Funeral Home in Speedway, Indiana is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church in Speedway, Indiana.
