John Richard "Dick" Starr
Passed away peacefully at his Indianapolis residence on Thursday, November 22, 2012. He was born on May 27, 1922 in Gary, Indiana.
In May, Dick celebrated his 67th wedding anniversary with his wife and childhood sweetheart, Irene, who survives. He attended Indiana University in Bloomington for a short time before World War II interrupted his studies. After discharge from the Navy, Dick and Irene married and made their first home in West Lafayette, where he enrolled in the Purdue College of Pharmacy. After graduation Dick was employed by Walgreens, and took his first job with the company in Albany, New York. For many years, he was an executive overseeing the downtown Chicago stores which included the iconic flagship store at State and Randolph.
Dick was the proud father of two daughters, Sandra (Robert) Kleymeyer and Sharon (James) Allan. After his retirement, Dick and Irene moved from their longtime home in Flossmoor, Illinois so they would be closer to family in the Indianapolis area. He was a loving grandfather to Amy (Seth) Stevens and Matthew (Andrea) Kleymeyer, and a great-grandfather to Maren and Sean Stevens.
Dick was an avid golfer, and closely followed IU basketball, football, and the Chicago Bears. Also, he took great pleasure in celebrating holidays and special occasions. He was a former member of the Flossmoor Country Club, and current member of Woodland in Carmel. He was also affiliated with Sigma Chi fraternity at IU.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 28 in the parlor of Second Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., followed by a service in the Milner chapel at 11 a.m. Burial will be private. Any contributions in Dick's memory may be made to a
