John W. Burns Sr.

John W. Burns, Sr.

87, of Indianapolis, passed away June 19, 2013. He was born October 25, 1925, to the late John W. and Mary C. Carter Burns. John was a graduate of Arsenal Tech High School. He served his country in the 13th Air Force Division of the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII, where he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart.

John was a member Our Lady of Greenwood Catholic Church, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Knights of Columbus and the Moose Lodge. He enjoyed spending time with his family, going on cruises, and playing poker.

Visitation will be Monday, June 24, 2013, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel , 9606 E. Washington St. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Greenwood Catholic Church, 335 S. Meridian St., Greenwood.

John is survived by his brother, David G. Burns (CarolJo); children, John W. Burns, Jr., Richard Burns (Judy) and Cheryl Russell; grandchildren, Cathy Russell, Heather Deters, Charity Russell and Ryan Burns; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

John's wife, Gladys Burns; and siblings, Francis M. Burns and Mary E. Frick, preceded him in death.
