Joseph H. Cortese

Joseph H. Cortese D.D.S.

77, of Indianapolis, passed away on May 18, 2013. He was born on June 24, 1935 to Dr. Thomas Cortese, Sr. and Thelma Donato Cortese. He graduated from Cathedral High School in 1953, Indiana Univ., Bloomington, in 1957, and the Indiana University School of Dentistry in 1961.

Joe maintained a private dental practice on the south side of the city and for several years enjoyed operating an additional office on the Circle downtown. Joe was a proud lifetime member of the American Dental Assoc. and in 2001 began a fulfilling retirement spent in Indianapolis and Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

Throughout his life Joe enjoyed cooking, golf, drawing, painting and stained glass art. He was an avid participant in the Arts Competition at the Indiana State Fair, winning awards for multiple pieces of stained glass art. He pursued many painting techniques and enjoyed photographing subjects to paint in his home studio. Joe enjoyed the comradreship of golf with friends and one of his golfing highlights was achieving a hole-in-one while playing with grandsons.

Joe is survived by his wife of 54 years, Donna Steed Cortese, whom he met when they were undergraduate students at Indiana Univ.; their children, Steve Cortese (Eileen) and Lisa Allie (John); grandchildren, Lauren & Joe Cortese and John & Sam Allie and brother, Dr. Thomas Cortese, Jr. (Nia) and family.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in G.H. Herrmann Madison Avenue Funeral Home , 5141 Madison Avenue, Indianapolis, IN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, May 23 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Roch Catholic Church, 3600 S. Pennsylvania St., Indianapolis, IN 46227. Joseph will be laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery.

Joe's family wishes to express their gratitude to Doctors Thomas Howard and Patrick Loehrer, and the staff at the Simon Cancer Center for their tireless care and kindness through Joe's surgery and illness.
