Laura Effie Buchanan Brown

Of Greenwood, IN, passed away on Wednesday, November 28, 2012. She was born June 29, 1932, in Richland County, IL, to the late Laura Buchanan Brock-Jones. She grew up in Casey, IL, graduated from Casey High School in 1950 and graduated magna cum laude from Indiana Central College in 1954, with a BA in English. She married her college sweetheart, Keith Brown, on December 19, 1953,

Effie taught at IPS #33 for two years, and Perry Township Junior High for one year before rearing four children. She earned her MS from Butler University, and returned to Perry Township in 1973 as Media Specialist at Perry Meridian High School. In 1977, she transferred to Meridian Middle School as Media Director until her retirement in 1992. Effie was a great helpmate to Keith and had a love for reading and sharing family history with her children and grandchildren.

She served on the Indiana Central College (now University of Indianapolis) Alumni Association Board of Directors, including one year as its President; Rosedale Hills United Methodist Church as church librarian and communion steward for many years; and on the Volunteer Executive Committee at Greenwood Village South, her home for the last eight years.

Effie is survived by her husband Keith; children, Derek (Debbie) Brown of Galena, Kevin (Charlene) Brown and David Brown of Indianapolis, Lisa (Albert) Andreas of Ft. Wayne; grandchildren, Laurann Rodriguez, Cara, Kelly, and Kacey Brown, and Steven Andreas; great grandson, Diego Rodriguez; and half-brother, Terry Brock-Jones.

Visitation will be at Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center , 7602 Madison Avenue from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, November 30, 2012 and 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 1. A service celebrating her life will be at Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 1. She will be laid to rest in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, State Road 135, Greenwood.
