Lawrence Joseph Downey
Larry was born on September 1, 1931 in Indianapolis to Lawrence and Gladys (Shotwell) Downey. He died on August 12, 2013 in St. Vincent's Hospice after a brief illness. He was 81.
Larry retired from the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library after forty-two years of loyal public service. He began working for the library when he was in high school. During his tenure with the library he held various positions: public service librarian, manager of Personnel, and assistant Director of the Marion County library system. After his retirement Mr. Downey authored "A Live Place in the Whole Town, a History of the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library, 1873-1990", which was published by the Library Foundation in 1991. He resided at the Greenwood Village retirement community. While living there he managed and renovated their library.
Mr. Downey received a Bachelor of Arts from Butler University, and a Masters in Library and Information Science from Indiana University.
Larry enjoyed traveling. He sailed on the Queen Mary and the Queen Elizabeth II to Europe. He had a deep appreciation of the Arts. He especially enjoyed attending the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and Broadway plays and musicals. He was a former docent for the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Jack Downey. He is survived by his niece Pamela (Tom) Hanna, and friends.
Mr. Downey's funeral will be celebrated on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel of Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral - 1347 North Meridian Street - Indianapolis. Visitation will occur in the chapel one half hour prior to the service at 12:30 p.m. He was a longtime member of the Cathedral parish. Entombment will occur in the mausoleum at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.
