Michael B. Spence, M.D.

passed away March 8th from multiple diabetic complications in Fort Myers, FL, where he had lived since 2004.

A former Carmel, IN, resident, Dr. Spence was born November 6, 1939 in Effingham, IL, the son of the late Arthur Clarence Spence and Eleanor Pauline Blood Spence.

He and his family moved to Evansville when he was 2. He graduated from Bosse High School and Evansville College where he was a two-year president of the student government and member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He received his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1965 and was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.

In 1966, Dr. Spence completed his rotating internship at Wilford Hall, the United States Air Force Hospital located at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. He next fulfilled his General Medical Officer duties at South Ruislip Air Force Base in London, England, completing them in 1969. He then attended Malinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University in St. Louis, MO finishing in 1972.

Dr. Spence then resumed his Air Force career at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington D.C., receiving the Meritorious Service Award in 1975, national board certification in Diagnostic Radiology and an honorable discharge as Lt. Colonel in 1976. He went into private practice as a diagnostic radiologist and retired from Radiology Specialists of Indiana in 2002. He was affiliated with the American Medical Association, Radiological Society of North America and the American Board of Radiology.

A fan of all sports, he especially enjoyed golf, I.U. basketball and St. Louis Cardinals baseball. He coached his sons in Carmel Dads' Club baseball. Other interests included photography, collecting model electric trains and hand-carved duck decoys during his travels.

Dr. Spence is survived by his wife of 46 years, Cheryl Amelia Schaefer Spence of Fort Myers; their sons, Scott Spence of Noblesville, IN and Colin Spence of Carmel, IN; daughters -in-law Kelli and Lissa Spence; grandchildren Will (13), Meg (11), Sam (11), Sasha (6), and Anna (5); his brother, David Spence of Dallas, TX and his sister-in-law, Claudia Hasselquist of Boise, ID.

The family wishes to thank the nursing staff at the Lodge at Cypress Cove in Ft. Myers, FL for their loving care and compassion this past year.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday March 15 at Flanner and Buchanan- Carmel , 325 East Carmel Drive, Carmel, IN. Private graveside service at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, Fishers, IN.
