Stephen J. Johnson

Stephen J. Johnson

Passed away at his home in Plainfield on the afternoon of March 2, 2014. He was born on May 16, 1947, in Lafayette, Indiana, son of Herbert Ossian Johnson and Margaret Blanchard. He graduated from Upper Arlington H.S. in Columbus, OH in 1965. He then attended Michigan State University, earning a bachelor's degree in zoology in 1970.

After graduating from Indiana University-Bloomington Law School in 1973, Stephen began working for the Indiana Prosecuting Attorney's Council. He eventually became its Executive Director in 1997, a position he held until his retirement in 2011. In 1998, he was honored with the Eugene "Shine" Feller Award, a sort of 'lifetime achievement' award given by Indiana's prosecutors to those with distinguished service in their field. In addition to serving on several legislative committees, drafting & proposing bills, educating & mentoring prosecutors & other law enforcement officers (including the authorship of an Ethics Manual for prosecutors), and helping re-write the Indiana penal code, one of Stephen's most significant achievements was to implement and oversee a statewide computer system linking state & local offices in the criminal justice system. Over the course of his nearly forty years of public service, Stephen was also a highly sought-out lecturer, frequently called upon to share his expert knowledge on a variety of topics in the arena of law enforcement on both the state and local level.

In 2011, Governor Mitch Daniels recognized Stephen as a Distinguished Hoosier, a distinction bestowed upon those who have made significant contributions to the state of Indiana in the service of its citizens. The Indiana Supreme Court also recognized Stephen for his years of service.

Although he was honored to receive countless accolades from his professional peers lauding the many hours of his life spent in the public sphere, Stephen's greatest joy was derived from those spent in private, in the company of his family. He was known by all as a loving husband to his wife Susie, to whom he was married forty-seven years, and a dedicated father and grandfather. Whether being present at all of their sporting events, recitals, graduations, weddings, or births, there was no greater passion in Stephen's life than the happiness of his family.

Stephen is survived by his wife, Susie Johnson; children, Brian (Elizabeth) Johnson, Glenn (Leigh Anne) Johnson, Marni (Craig) Steinfort, and Matt Johnson; grandchildren, Elyse, Christopher, Caroline, Rachel, Luke, Nicholas, Alexander, and Keira; sister, Janice Johnson; and aunt, Audree Wentworth.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Ossian and Margaret Mae (Blanchard) Johnson.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 6 at G.H. Herrmann Madison Avenue Funeral Home , 5141 Madison Avenue, Indianapolis, IN. Additional visitation will take place from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 7 at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 445 E. Stop 11 Road, Indianapolis, IN.
