Suzanne M. Short

Suzanne Mae Short

51, of Laguna Beach, passed away Saturday, January 12, 2013. Suzanne, nicknamed "Shorty", Suzanne was known for her amazing artwork, positive attitude, vibrant spirit, kindness, ever present smile, and love of God and humanity.

Suzanne was born in Dayton, OH to Chuck and Laverne Short on August 19, 1961. She grew up in Indianapolis and attended Indiana University and majored in architectural drafting. She was hit by a drunk driver during her junior year which left her a quadriplegic. She rehabbed at Craig Hospital in Denver, Colorado. She then moved out to Southern California, briefly in Huntington Beach, and then to Laguna Beach in 1984. She was a member of Laguna Beach United Methodist Church and appeared in a recent video of the church.

Suzanne worked hard to become a mouth artist and became very accomplished at it. She started drawing her dog, "Angel" and sent a new Angel Christmas card out each year. Soon the word spread and she was commissioned to draw other people's pets, children's portraits, and architectural watercolors. In the early 90's, her favorite TV show was "Cheers", so she did portraits of Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson, which she later had an opportunity to present to each of them.

Suzanne was a featured artist at the Laguna Beach Sawdust Festival and was featured in an article in the LA Times. In 2006, she and Dr. Hans Keirsted of the Reeve-Irvine Spinal Cord Research Center were featured in a 60 Minutes interview with Ed Bradley.

Suzanne enjoyed her involvement with the Reeve-Irvine Research Center at UC Irvine and she loved following the Indiana University basketball team. Suzanne chose to live a happy life filled with friends and activities, including skydiving!

Suzanne is survived by her father Chuck Short of Fort Myers, FL, her sister Lesli Hollowell and her husband David of Asheville, NC, Special Dad II, Bruce Lamb of Waynesville, OH and special friends Rosanne Nelson and Jim and Marcia Shelton. She was preceded in death by her mother Laverne.

A memorial service will be held at Laguna Beach United Methodist Church at 2:00 on Friday, January 18 with the Rev. Cindy Williams officiating. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall immediately following the service.
