Wendell D. "Woody" Vandivier

Born in Johnson County July 3, 1923 passed away at age 90 on January 4, 2014. Woody enjoyed a full and successful life. He and his wife, Juanita, enjoyed over 55 years of marriage, friendship, travel and joy raising a family.

He served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII in the South Pacific receiving a Purple Heart and was a lifetime member of Ernie Pyle VFW #1120 and 43rd Infantry Division Veterans Association.

Woody was a carpenter by trade, and served the profession in various roles at the local, regional and national levels with the International brotherhood of Carpenters & Joiners of America. He retired in 1986 after 20 years as the Carpenter Apprenticeship Training Program Coordinator where he was an advocate for the trade and vocational education. He was a 50+ year member of Carpenters local union #758 (now 301). He served on the Board of Trustees for Ivy Tech Community College including a term as President of the Board. In 1981 he received the Sagamore of the Wabash award from Governor Orr.

He served the Indianapolis community through his children's schools, Boy Scouts of America, Irvington Presbyterian church and as a member of the Indianapolis Board of Public Works under Mayor Dick Lugar.

Woody was a 50+ year member of Englewood F&AM #715, and the Indianapolis Scottish Rite where he received the 33rd Degree. He was also a member of the Murat Shrine.

He will be remembered as one who was very proud of his family and cared deeply for and believed in his Union and Masonic organization's goals. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, playing cards and collecting antique carpentry tools as a member of the Midwest Tool Collectors Association.

He will be remembered for his amazing sense of humor, his positive outlook and love for his country.

He is survived by wife, Juanita; his sons, Stan (Gail) Sutliff of VA; Stu (Candy) Sutliff of SC and daughter, Nancy (Mike) DeCamp of IN; his granddaughters, Heather Sutliff, Amy (Brent) Lenz, Megan (Pat) Marvil of VA, Lauren (Matt) Sleesman and Jill (Corey) Simpson of NC, Kelly (Sean) Price, UT, Angela and Andrea DeCamp of IN; his great-grandchildren, Parker and Carter Lenz and Claire and Drew Sleesman; his brother, Ed (Pat) Vandivier; brother-in-law, Clif (Jean) Smith; sister-in-law, Ruth Smith; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Corydon Vandivier, Letha (Vandivier) Borders; his son, Danny Vandivier; his brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Wilma Vandivier and brother-in-law, Robert E. Smith.

Services will be held at Noon on Saturday, January 11, 2014 in Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, Southport Chapel , 7520 Madison Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46227. Rev. Robert Heimach and Rev. Dr. Galen Schwarz officiating. Interment will follow in Bluff Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 until 8 p.m. on Friday, with a Masonic Service at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home.

Donations may be made to Indianapolis Scottish Rite Cathedral Foundation, Irvington Presbyterian Church, or the Indiana Masonic Home.
