Larry Darland Obituary

Larry R. Darland

66, of Indianapolis, passed on to Heaven on Tuesday, April 25, 2017.

He was born to the late Gale and Ruth Darland and was a 1969 graduate of Manual High School.  Larry became an IPD police officer in 1973 and retired a decorated IMPD officer in 2007; following retirement, Larry spent his last 10 years as a reserve IMPD officer.  His greatest passions were his God, his family, and his country.

His funeral wish is for family and friends to say goodbye, honor America and the flag, and think of him when "God Bless America" and "America the Beautiful" are heard.  Larry adored his family and was selfless in his service to them.  He will be most remembered for his sense of humor, always pulling pranks, telling jokes, and his tender heart, especially toward his wife, kids, and grandkids.

Larry is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Candy (Taylor) Darland; children, Michael Darland, Shaelyn Lorentz (Larry LaRoux), Sember Hahn (Andy), and Shauna Hockett (Jeff); grandchildren, Palmer, Porter, and Prestin Hahn; his two siblings, Gary Darland (Lynne), and Carolyn Crump (Chet); and a host of friends and colleagues from the IMPD.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate the life, wishes, and career as a public servant of Larry R. Darland from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at The Daniel F. O'Riley Funeral Home, 6107 S. East St., Indianapolis.  The funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at Garfield Park Community Church, 743 E. Pleasant Run Pkwy, South Drive, Indianapolis.  Additional calling will be from Noon until the time of the service on Wednesday at the church.  Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Wish For Heroes, Indiana Chapter or the Humane Society of Indianapolis.

Larry was a great neighbor.......He raised a great family. I met him many years ago when his children ask permission to swim in my pool... That was the first time I met him.....He came to my house to meet me & then gave the children permission to swim..... Larry has a great family and will be missed by all who knew him......His children & wife are a great reflection of the quality of this man....I will miss my neighbor & friend.

RIP Larry. I remember your smiling eyes and how kind you always were to me. We go back a long time friend. Back to 6th grade at good ole' school #20. I regret we never picked up our friendship when I returned to Indiana in 2002. You and my husband would have been good pals.

May God comfort Larry's family. I worked with Larry at Eli Lilly doing security. Larry always had a smile on his face and a few jokes to tell. Larry always spoke so highly of his family. He will be greatly missed.

I loved Larry. He was a great friend, great family man, great cop, and will be missed. He loved to tease and do pranks, mostly on me it seems. Always smiling or laughing around me, at me, and with me. I rode on his beat with him many times.
With every ride along ,even though we had fun together, I saw the qualities of a sincere and dedicated police officer. He was brave, smart, empathetic, and took his job very seriously. He loved his family, and friends. Larry was just a quality person and never stopped thinking of others. With me being so serious in this, I can hear him laughing and making fun of me. I hope to see you in heaven someday. Just look for the awning above my place ! I'll build one for you when I get there !
