Alma O. Cook
93, a long time Franklin, Indiana resident passed away on December 24, 2011. She was born November 26, 1918 to the late Edward and Philomena Abt in Pittsburgh, PA.
She graduated from St. Francis School of Nursing in Pittsburgh in 1940 and enlisted in the Army. While stationed in Fort Lewis, Washington, Second Lt. Abt met and married Capt. Herschel E. Cook on May 29, 1943.
When World War II ended, the Cooks moved to Lafayette so Herschel could complete his undergraduate work at Purdue University. Upon graduating from Purdue, the Cooks moved to Franklin, Indiana where they raised three children. Alma, fondly known as "Cookie," worked as recovery room nurse at Johnson Memorial Hospital until retiring in 1984. She also was an avid gardener. The Cooks were known for their plants and vegetables, and their annual abundant crop of tomatoes. Alma loved to travel, having visited 49 of 50 states as well as many foreign countries. She accompanied her husband on two visits to Franklins' sister city in Japan.
Alma was a devoted wife of 64 years and a loving mother. Her husband preceded her in death on December 22, 2007. Alma is survived by daughters, Sandra Hollingshead (Richard) of Zionsville and Cheryl McMahon of Greenwood; son, Herschel E. Cook, II (Mary) of Lafayette; grandchildren Jami Fugate (Dan), Hillary Weigle (Troy Sphar) and Brian Hollingshead (Erin) and great-grandson, Jadan Fugate.
A service will be conducted on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home , 2898 North Morton Street, (U.S. 31 North) in Franklin. Friends may call on from 10:00 a.m. to the time of service at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, where military rites will be conducted by the Franklin American Legion Post No. 205 of Franklin.
