Colonel Charles J. Beck (USAF, Ret.)
Charles J. "Chuck" Beck, 92, of Punta Gorda, FL, died August 28, 2011. Col. Beck received his wings as a sergeant pilot in June 1942 and was commissioned in 1943. He was one of the elite corps known as the "Flying Staff Sergeants." He was promoted to full colonel in 1953. As a squadron commander during World War II, Col. Beck spent 25 months in the South Pacific, accumulating more than 600 combat hours. The majority of his flying experience was in multi-engine aircraft with hundreds of hours as a B-52 pilot. Col. Beck was decorated by the Spanish Government for his service in developing one of 3 SAC bases in 1958. His career included service as Base and Wing commanders at numerous U.S. bases. He retired after 31-1/2 years of service in 1973.
Col. Beck was married for 65 years to the former Norvella (Vel) June Judd of Markleville, Ind. He is survived by their children, Becky Bovell of Punta Gorda, FL and Thomas C. Beck of Eugene, OR. Services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery. Friends may visit:
