Words cannot express my sadness on hearing about the death of Dr. Flockhart. Dave was my mentor. He was always kind and supportive of my career. He gave some much of his time and talent to all his trainees.
I will miss Dave immensely. I wish to extend my deepest sympathy to his family.

I never met Dr. Flockhart personally but we exchanged a few e mails when I was suffering a horrible reaction to Cipro. He was very kind and went above and beyond to send me in the right direction. He did this because he was good man because he really didn't have to. Much love to his family!

The loss of Dr. Flockhart is monumental. I loved him as my doctor and my friend. Such a brilliant mind, blended with an amazing personality and spirit. - I can't tell you how devastated I am to hear he is gone. To share our love of music was amazing. - I'll think of you every time I listen to ELO (Electric Light Orchestra). - Much love to you.

Dr. Flockhart's passing is a huge loss to the medical community. He was not only a great doctor to me, but a best friend. His loss hit me hard, as I'm sure it did many of his other patients. He was a great man and his legacy will live on through the many people he worked with and helped.

I can't say enough what a huge blow this was to see. David was a mentor of mine from the first time we met. He included me in what he was working on, asking for advice when clearly he knew in advance what needed to be done. He cared enough to mentor by example - be inclusive, forthright and always caring enough to ask about my life and how things were going. Given my special relationship with Hawai'i, I think it only suitable to say that Dave practiced Aloha. Aloha means mutual regard and affection and extends warmth in caring with no obligation in return. It is the essence of relationships in which each person is important to every other person for collective existence.

Aloha, Dave. Not sure now what to do now without you.

I first met Dave in May of 2012, at which time not a single lab in Indiana University School of Medicine wanted to take me as a rotation student, mainly because my undergraduate background was in Chemistry instead of Medical Science or Pharmacology. I was ready to go back to China when Dave (only Dave after I contacted about 40 PIs) offered me an opportunity as a rotation student. During the rotation, Dave truly treated me as his graduate student and trained me with the skills and knowledge for clinical pharmacology research.
It was one of the happiest moments in my life when Dave accepted me as his graduate student! I still remember his requirements (the only two requirements for so many years) for me on the first day of my being officially accepted. They can be summarized in two words: integrity and respect! He required me to be honest both inside and outside the lab and he required me to respect everyone, both researchers and administrators, both inside and outside IUSM.
During my Ph.D., Dave devoted a great deal of time and effort into making me into a critical thinker with a broad view of science. More importantly, Dave cared about my intellectual freedom and my career development.
Dave's dedication to science and people, and his indomitable spirit in his battle against his cancer kept my will strong to complete my Ph.D. thesis and will inspire me for my whole life. I am so honored to have been Dr. David Flockhart's graduate student and I will never forget this honor.
Dave, you have been such an incredible, wonderful mentor and a great, generous friend. Thank you so much for believing in me. Thank you so much for giving me an opportunity when I was in the most difficult time during my Ph.D. training. Thank you so much for encouraging me and inspiring me to find my voice. Thank you so much for making such a positive difference to my life.
