Dennis Hanshew

A longtime member of the features and newsroom staff of The Indianapolis News and The Indianapolis Star, as well as WTTV-Channel 4, died Sept. 8.

Born Nov. 4, 1945 Dennis grew up in the Fountain Square area, and was a longtime resident of the Southside.

Graduating as valedictorian from Tech High School in 1964, Dennis later served in the U.S. Army until 1972. Dennis was a lover of books and a collector of films and TV shows. A fan of Turner Classic Movies, he was a mental archive of things related to cinema and television. He was a devoted caretaker for his mother until her death in 1994. Quiet and methodical, Dennis was an affable, diligent and dependable colleague.

In recent years, Dennis had fallen ill as the result of a stroke. Although his health left him in need of assistance, he stayed determined to be as independent as possible. He died in the company of friends and is buried at Washington Park Cemetery East. Military honors and a celebration of his life will be conducted graveside on Nov. 4, at 5:30 p.m.
