Dorothy Marie Curts Powell

Dorothy Powell, 95, of Indianapolis, passed away on July 20, 2014. She was born on June 19, 1919 in Cass County, Indiana to the late Ralph and Madys (Moore) Curts. In 1946 she married George A. Powell, he preceded her in death on April 30, 1957.

Mrs. Powell owned and operated her own beauty shop in Thorntown, Indiana from 1940 to 1946. She was a homemaker for many years and then worked for AT&T and Lucent. She retired from the telephone company in 1984 after 18 years of service.

She was a member of Crooked Creek Baptist Church, where she was a long time member of the Chancel Choir and served in many capacities over the last 65 years. She was also a member of the Goodwill Industries Service Guild and in 1994 she received Volunteer of the Year Award.

She was preceded in death by her son, Dan of Indianapolis and sisters, Lulah Beale, Kathryn Shields and brother, Emerson Curts.

She is survived by her son, Edwin Powell (Joan) of Richmond and daughter-in-law, Marcia (Isenhour) Powell of Carmel; grandchildren, Suzanne Callahan (Jerry) of Grand Rapids and Scott Powell (Christy) of Brownsburg; great-grandchildren, Jack Callahan, Hannah Callahan, Connor Callahan, Michael Powell, Matthew Powell, Emma Scott and Sadie Scott. She is also survived by brothers, Emmett Curts of Frankfort, George Curts (Jean) of Lebanon and nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in Flanner and Buchanan - Washington Park North . Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Lincoln Memory Gardens.
