John Lytle Obituary

John Buttler Lytle

86, of Indianapolis, passed away in Petoskey, MI, on Tuesday, August 4, 2015, where he was a long-time summer resident. He was born on January 23, 1929 in Kankakee, IL, to Leland John and Stella (Buttler) Lytle. They preceded him in death along with his brother, Leland C. Lytle, and his son-in-law Anthony Suskovich.

He was named to the All-City High School Football Team and graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in 1948. He was a proud recipient of their Distinguished Alumnus Award. Following a football career at the University of Illinois and The Ohio State University, he served during the Korean War for the United States Army. John married the love of his life, Rhea "Joan" (Stanton) Lytle in 1952. She and their four daughters, Linda (Dale) Mohlenhoff of Liberty Lake, WA, Nancy (Glenn) Gangi of Indianapolis, Karen (John) McVeigh, of Indianapolis, and Kathy Suskovich, McCordsville, IN, survive along with 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He had incredible strength and determination as a polio survivor. He had a successful career in business and gave generously to many charities. He owned multiple businesses, including the 100-year old A.G. Maas Company for 25 years and Titan Industries, Inc. for 50 years. John enjoyed playing bridge, collecting stamps, and was an avid fan of the Indianapolis Colts and Hoosiers Basketball. His family meant the world to him and was never happier than when he was with them.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 29, 2015, at Second Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis. A reception will immediately follow. Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to Second Presbyterian Church, the ATHS Alumni Association or to the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center.

Condolences on the loss of this fine man. My thoughts are with you.

John was a close friend for many years, we played football together at Tech and I well remember what a talented running back he was. After school and army service we met again through business and attended the 500 together several times. I admired his strength and tenacity fighting his affliction, it never beat him. We were neighbors in Lantern Hills and had good times remembering old friends and team mates. His lovely wife and children were a blessing. We moved to Maine 11 years ago and have not seen each other since, which I regret. He was a great guy and I will miss him, as will my wife Ginny. I think he did not expect to live as long as he did. God bless him and all of his family. Jim and Ginny Orem
