John Clark Delamater
Age 89, of Carmel, passed away on July 22, 2013. He was born on December 16, 1923, in the Chicago area to Harrison Ray and Celia Clark Delamater. John was raised in Richmond, Indiana, and spent much time on his aunt's and uncle's farm in Lynn, Indiana.
John was a 1942 graduate of Richmond High School and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After his honorable discharge from military service, he attended Purdue University where he studied Mechanical Engineering. He was an active member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Following his years at Purdue, John accepted a position that provided an opportunity for him to live in Philadelphia, Chicago, and New York.
In the late 1940's, John returned to Richmond and was employed at the Richmond Fireproof Door Company. John met Mary Lillian Langan who was an elementary teacher in the public school system. They were married in Mary's hometown, Irvine, Kentucky, on December 23, 1951, and moved to Florida in 1952. In 1957, John and family moved to Indianapolis where he accepted a job with Engineering Metal Products. They became long-time active members of University Park Christian Church where they established many faithful friendships.
Throughout his life, John was an avid car enthusiast. He was a member of the Classic Car Club, Milestone Car Society, and most notably, the Ferrari Club of America. John was one of the eight founders and was the club's first vice-president. In 1973 John went into business for himself as a broker of vintage and collector cars. He continued to work from his residence in Carmel until 2008.
John loved being around family, people, and cars. He was a jovial and personable man.
John is survived by his daughter, Deborah (Fred) Bonhomme; son, Mark (Tracy) Delamater; and granddaughter, Isabella Delamater.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary and his brother, James.
Interment occurred on July 27, 2013, at Earlham Cemetery in Richmond. Arrangements were made by Doan & Mills Funeral Home , 790 National Road West, Richmond, Indiana.
A Memorial Service will be held at Allisonville Christian Church, 7701 Allisonville Rd., Indianapolis, Indiana, on Saturday, August 10, 2013, at 2:00 p.m., with a visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m.
