Lerona Jewel Mitchell-Watts

Born November 29, 1939, passed into eternal life on January 2, 2013.

Raised a member of 25th Street Baptist Church, she had also been a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church. At the time of her death she was a member of New Jerusalem Baptist Church.

A graduate of Crispus Attuck High School, where she was Homecoming Queen, she earned a scholarship to Central State University.

She embarked upon her career at Flanner House and worked in the offices of Mayor Richard Lugar and LaRue Carter Hospital. At the Health & Hospital Corporation, she first became Director of Human Resources and worked there for over 20 years. Quite a ground breaker in Human Resources, she served as Director at IndyGo and at Center Township under Carl Drummer. Noted as a consultant and diversity facilitator, she channeled her energies toward the Indianapolis police and fire departments.

On Thursday, January 10, there will be visitation from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., with a Celebration of Life Service at 11 a.m. at Northside New Era Baptist Church, 517 West 30th Street. Interment will be in Crown Hill Cemetery.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Jordan Richard Watts; daughters, Berlynne Davis (James, Jr.) and Lanay Mitchell; sons, Anthony J. Mitchell, Khasi and Kourtni Townsell; grandchildren and siblings, Jacquelyn Brooks (Alonzo), Michael Lindsey (Belinda), Rita Lindsey, Darlene Ricketts, Michael Ricketts, Dr. Linda Ricketts, Mary Ross and Anita Odom-Walls (Robert).

The family asks that memorial contributions be directed to Flanner House and the Crispus Attucks Foundation.
