Mary Lillian Delamater
Age 88, of Carmel, passed away on March 13, 2013.
Mary was born on January 8, 1925, in Irvine, Kentucky, to Owen Heath and Alma Lucille Langan. She had an identical twin, Mildred Lucille Langan Whiddon and a brother, Owen Heath Langan II. Mary and Mildred were raised by family members, T.H. and Mamie Broaddus along with their children, Earl Broaddus and Dorothy Broaddus Crowe.
Mary was a 1943 graduate of Estill Co. High in Irvine, Kentucky, and was their valedictorian. She graduated from Eastern Kentucky University in 1947, where she received her B.S. in education. Mary was chosen to be in the 1947 "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities" and was a member of Kappa Delta Pi.
Mary and her twin taught in their hometown for two years then moved to Richmond, Indiana, and taught. They were active members of the traveling musician team from the First Christian Church. Mary met John Clark Delamater in Richmond. They were married on December 23, 1951, in the Disciples of Christ Church in Irvine, Kentucky. Mary and John lived in Florida briefly, and then moved permanently to the Indianapolis area.
Mary was the vocal and hand bell choir director and organist at University Park Christian Church for many years. She gently guided innumerable children through piano lessons, church school classes, choir festivals, and musicals. She was a member of PEO, Matinee Musicale, and volunteered as a piano teacher at Heritage Place.
Throughout her life, Mary was filled with patience, compassion and faith.
In addition to her husband, John, Mary is survived by her daughter, Deborah (Fred) Bonhomme; son, Mark (Tracy) Delamater; granddaughter, Isabella Delamater; sister, Dorothy (Jim) Crowe; and several nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Mildred, Owen, and Earl.
Interment occurred March 16th in Earlham Cemetery, Richmond. Arrangements were through Doan & Mills Funeral Home.
Mary's Memorial Service will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 13, 2013, at Allisonville Christian Church, 7701 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis.
