Mary Nell Washburn Palmer
91, Indianapolis, passed away on November 23, 2012. On January 29, 1921, Mrs. Palmer was born in her home in Springport, Indiana to Harley Elmer Washburn and Lillian (Robertson) Washburn. She was the middle child to her older brother Paul Thomas Washburn and younger brother Harold Logan Washburn (both deceased). Mrs. Palmer was graduated from Shortridge High School, and she also attended the Indianapolis Academy of Art. She was an avid seamstress and enjoyed all things related to fashion and design. In the 1940s, Mrs. Palmer worked for Eli Lilly and Company in the areas of inspection and quality control. At Lilly, she was recognized for her penmanship, which was such that Mr. Eli Lilly appointed her to handwrite the company's death announcements of Josiah K. Lilly, Sr. She also served as a carhop at the Tee Pee Restaurant, where she met her husband Garth LaMoyne Palmer (deceased). After marrying Garth in 1948, she devoted her life to rearing her children and later enjoying her grandchildren and great- grandchildren. In the 1980s, she served Flanner & Buchanan Mortuaries as a receptionist. Over the years, she served the congregations of Lawrence Methodist Church, East 38th Street Christian Church, Post Road Christian Church, Christ's Church at Geist, and North Liberty Christian Church. Mrs. Palmer's children are Christopher Alan Palmer (Diane) of West Chester, PA, Brad William Palmer (deceased), Paula Nell (Palmer) Stanfill (Timothy), and Keith Warren Palmer (Karen). She leaves six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, November 26, 2012, at Flanner & Buchanan-Lawrence, 5215 N. Shadeland Ave. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 27, 2012, with visitation one hour prior to service. Interment will follow at Washington Park East Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Clare Bridge Unit at Robin Run Healthcare, 6370 Robin Run West Drive, Indianapolis, IN 46268, in care of Gordon Benfield.
