Melvin C. Ortel

85, of New Palestine, passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 in New Palestine, Indiana. He was the first baby born on October 21, 1927 in Coleman Hospital to the parents of Edward and Bessie (Bruce) Ortel in Indianapolis, Indiana. He attended Earlham College and graduated from Indiana University, with a Bachelor's Degree. Melvin served in the Army during World War II.

He worked as an accountant and tax preparer for Mel's Tax Service for fifty years. He was an avid beekeeper. Melvin was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, former Treasurer for the church, usher and Sunday School teacher. He was also a member of the L.L.L., Lutheran Layman's League.

Surviving Melvin are his wife, Mildred; children, Tim (Aiko) Ortel of Saratoga, California, Bruce (Becky) Ortel of Tallahassee, Florida, Mark (Peggy) Ortel of Centerpoint, Indiana, Marcia (Fred) Foster of Greenwood, Indiana, Debra (Steve) Jones of Attica, Indiana, Karen Ortel of Beech Grove, Indiana, David Ortel of Lafayette, Indiana and Paul (Connie) Ortel of Indianapolis, Indiana; sister, Audrey Ortel of New Palestine; brother, Don (Marlis) Ortel of New Palestine; sister-in-law Ruth Ortel of Indianapols; seven grandchildren, Anne, Elizabeth, Cory, Kaleigh, Dana, Kathy and Sam; and one great-granddaughter, Caitlan. Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers, Elmer Ortel and Tommy Ortel.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 26, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. in Zion Lutheran Church in New Palestine, with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. prior to the service. Pastor Jason Taylor will be officiating. Burial will follow at Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery in New Palestine.
