Michael "Mike" John Ferin

72, passed away in Indianapolis, IN after a short battle with lung cancer.

Born July 16, 1940 to Mary and Albert Ferin in Des Moines, Iowa, Mike is preceded in death by both parents and his brother Larry Ferin (Ankeny, IA). Mike is survived by his wife of 50 years Jane (Leonard) Ferin of New Palestine, IN, his three children, Mark Ferin (Wildwood, MO), Michelle Ferin Hoffman and Doug Hoffman (Bloomington, IN), Amy Ferin Snelling and Chris Snelling (Tecumseh, MI), and grandchildren Lauren and Tyler Ferin, Rachel, Sarah and Sophia Hoffman, and Eliza, Emma and Ava Snelling.

Mike was a passionate extrovert, who could speak on any subject, often making converts to his views. Mike's joy of life and gift of expressive chat was shared with all who joined him at the tee box, in the fishing boat, around the dinner table, exploring nature with his beloved grandchildren, or at the cribbage board. He left an indelible mark on all the hearts he touched.

Mike 's storied and lengthy career came full circle as an educator; first, as a high school history teacher in Milwaukee, WI and last, as a substitute teacher in New Palestine, IN. During the thirty plus years in-between, he enjoyed a highly successful career fundraising for a number of prestigious universities (the most recent being the University of Indianapolis).

Mike was quick to volunteer and served others through his work with Fairbanks, and the National and local Democratic Party, among others.

Visitation will be Saturday, Janurary 5, 2013 at GH Her mann Funeral Home (5141 Madison Ave, Indianapolis, IN) from 12:30 to 3:00 with a service following at 3:00 pm. A graveside service will take place in Odebolt, Iowa where Mike will be laid to rest.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests a gift in Mike's name be given to the University of Indianapolis or the at http://www.uindy.edu or http://www.Cancer.org, respectively. Online condolences may be shared with the family at http://www.ghherrmann.com
