Porter Eckerty, Jr.
87, of New Castle, died July 31, 2013.
He was born May 24, 1926 in Eckerty, Indiana, a son of the late Porter Eckerty, Sr. and Laura (Ash) Eckerty.
Porter worked for Marsh Supermarkets for 31 years, starting as a grocery sacker and finishing his career as a Vice-President of Operations. On February 28, 1948 he married the love of his life, Vivian G. Bennett, and together they enjoyed 62 years of marriage. He had been a member of New Castle First United Methodist Church since 1962. He served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII. He was a member of the VFW in Eckerty and a long-time member of the Eckerty Lodge No. 719 F&AM. He loved to golf and fish and enjoyed annual fishing trips to Canada. Upon retirement he volunteered for Meals on Wheels.
He is survived by two sons, Doug (wife: Rhonda) Eckerty of Yorktown and Jim Eckerty of New Castle; two grandchildren, Kevin (wife: Lisa) Eckerty of Muncie and Leslie Eckerty of Anderson; one great-grandson, Jayden; a brother, Reese Eckerty of Clarksville and a sister, Lucille Garland of Evansville.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian G. (Bennett) Eckerty; and a brother, "Pete" Lester Eckerty.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 5, 2013 at Sproles Family Funeral Home in New Castle. Burial in South Mound Cemetery with military honors. Friends may call from 2 – 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
