Sandra Spuzich Obituary

Sandra Spuzich

Indianapolis born Professional golfer, aged 78, passed away at home on October 6th, 2015. Sandra was perhaps one of Indiana's finest golfers, learning the game and honing her skills under the tutelage of Mike Sullivan at Speedway GC. Competing on the LPGA Tour for 30 years, she was the first Hoosier to win golf's US Open (1966) and amassed a further 6 victories before retiring from the Tour with a ranking amongst the top 70 career money winners.

Living in the "Haughville" neighborhood, Sandra attended local schools, graduating from Washington High School, and then graduated from IU with a degree in Education, teaching K-9 Physical Education in IPS schools for 2 ½ years before joining the LPGA Tour. In retirement, she lovingly tended her tomato and flower gardens and enjoyed her view over Broadmoor CC, while supervising her cats, Cotza, Beau and Ty.

She is survived by her Life Partner, Joyce Kazmierski; sister, Mary Lou Spaulding (husband David); nephews, Steven and Chip Spaulding; niece, Lori Spaulding; grand-nephews, Michael and Cameron Spaulding; and grand-niece, Alyssa Spaulding.

The family will have a private Celebration of Life gathering. Donations in Sandra's memory may be made to your favorite local Animal Shelter. Online condolences may be shared at www.conklefuneralhome.com

To the Spuzich Family & Joyce:

Our thoughts & prayers are with you. We have fond memories of Sandra as one of the most humble players on tour & one special person. Our family always enjoyed being around her during our years of tour life. She was gifted by God with a super golf swing & was just a delight to be paired with. This world would be a better world if more people were like Sandra. She had many attributes but two were her love for people & for animals. I know you will miss her.
May God's comfort & peace surround you,

Bob & Murle Breer, daughters,
Tracy Marshall & Vicki Hitt

Sorry to read of Sandra's passing.

My fond memory is of our win at The Pro-Am of The Corning Classic in 1980 since we were not supposed to win. It had been given to Donna Caponi's team and we were a distant dark horse. It was the greatest day of my golf life as Sandra made a very difficult putt on the 18th Hole to give us 17 under par. We matched cards with Donna's team and won ! I won a very special Steuben cocktail set that I still have. The Corning Leader' headlined the event with Donna Caponi's Team comes in second to Sandra Spuzich's Team, not that Sandra won.

May she rest in peace as she gave me a very special day in my life.

I was a classmate of Sophie's, Sandy's younger sister, growing up in Indiana. I knew of Joyce through junior competitions. Sandy was one that I admired as a young, beginning golfer. Living now in Minnesota, her U.S. Women's Open win at Hazeltine is honored here. Women's golf has last a great one! My heartfelt sympathies to Joyce and the Spuzick family.

Joyce and Family - Dad and I are so sorry to hear the news about Sandra. I grew up listening to stories from him about what a wonderful golfer and person she was. I also had the chance to play Hazeltine a few weeks ago, and it was wonderful see and read the display honoring her U.S. Open win. As a long time member at Broadmoor, I thought about her, and her accomplishments, every time I played by the house...she inspired me to work harder and will continue to do so.

To Kaz and the Sandra's entire Family. So sorry for your loss. One day I asked Spuz why she wasn't hitting balls before she teed off, she remarked she did not want to see any bad shots. She was merely swinging the club with a donut weight on her club- and it made sense.! My prayers are with you.
