William Gray "Bill" Earle

89, of Plainfield, died on January 16, 2013. He was born on March 4, 1923, a son of Thurman K. and Virginia (Sharpe) Earle. He married Ruth (Propheter) Earle on November 23, 1956, she survives.

Other survivors include his daughter, Susan Earle Imbody (Donald); his half-brother, Earl Smith; a niece, Bonnie Strange (Gary); nephews, Ray Smith Jr. (Kay), Larry Gehm (Judy), Charles and Vivian Langwell, and a great-nephew, Steven Strange.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Richard Earle and his sister-in-law, Virginia Earle.

Bill graduated from Carmel High School in 1941. He served in the United States Army Air Force. In 1960 he received the Fireman of the Year Award from the City of Indianapolis. Bill was promoted to Captain, then Chief of the Arson Division. He was also Deputy State Fire Marshal and Past President of the International Association of Arson Investigators. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Award Valley of Indianapolis Scottish Rite. Bill was a member of Masonic Lodge #653 F&AM in Plainfield, the Murat Shrine, Court 15 Royal Order of Jesters, and was the oldest living member of the Murat Highlanders. He was also a life member of Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, VFW and International Association of Fire Fighters. He started the first scout troop at Crossroads Rehabilitation Center, as well as Hobos and Sad Sacks.

Visitation will be on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, Greenwood Chapel , 481 West Main Street, Greenwood. The funeral will be at the funeral home on Monday at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Union Chapel Cemetery. Jeff Zaring and Tim Murphy will conduct services.
