William G. Fread

Died on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at home with his family. He was born on November 12, 1928 in Terre Haute, Indiana, the son of William O. and Edna (Burton) Fread. He married Norma Jeanne Morgan on June 9, 1951. She survives.

Educated in Terre Haute, IN, Mr. Fread graduated from Garfield High School and earned a B.S. in Music Education and a M.S. in Music Education from Indiana State University. Prior to his music education career, he served with the Fifth Air Force Headquarters Band in Hamilton Field, California.

His career in music education began in 1952 where he served as band director in the Odon-Madison Schools in Odon, Indiana. From 1953-1981 Mr. Fread served as Director of Bands in Hartford City Schools which upon consolidation became the Blackford County Schools. Mr. Fread was appointed the first executive director of the Indiana State School Music Association in 1981, serving in this position until his retirement in 1991. He directed the choir of Grace United Methodist Church while living in Hartford City before moving to Carmel, Indiana where he sang in the choir of the Carmel United Methodist Church.

His honors include the Outstanding Hoosier Musician of the Year from the Indiana Music Educators Association, Outstanding Bandmaster (1979) and Hall of Fame Award (1983) from Phi Beta Mu Bandmasters Fraternity, the Sudler Order of Merit from the John Philip Sousa Foundation (1989), and the Distinguished Hoosier Award from the Office of the Governor in 2006.

Survivors include his children, Susan (Jerry) Albrecht, Marion, Craig, Tampa, Chris (Carol), Noblesville Elizabeth (Kevin) Morgan, Ocala, FL and John (Julie), Cornelius, NC; his eleven grandchildren and a great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his brother, Donald B. Fread.

Calling hours are from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday in Flanner and Buchanan - Carmel , IN, with funeral services at the Carmel United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be made to Riley Children's Hospital, Peyton Manning Children's Hospital, and the Carmel United Methodist Church.
