Mary Janet Black
Mary Janet Black, an elementary schoolteacher in the Indianapolis Public School System for over 40 years, went to be with the Lord on Feb. 2, 2014. Blessed with many gifts, she dedicated her life in service to the Lord & her community. Mary Black was active in several churches, & civic organizations throughout her life. She shared her amazing vocal and musical talent in Church choirs, and was an ordained Minister. Many students & saints sought her Godly counsel & comfort.
One of 12 children of Felix & Jency Lee (Isom) Oglesby, Mary Janet was born April 28, 1944 in Franklin Co., Ga. She graduated from Ft. Valley State College there, and met and married the late James Horace Black Sr. in 1967. They moved to Indianapolis, where she received a Masters in Education Degree from Indiana University. At the time of her death, she had nearly completed her Doctoral Degree.
Besides her parents, she was pre-deceased by 3 brothers & 2 sisters. Mary Janet is survived by her cherished son, James Horace Black Jr. in addition to 2 brothers, Paul E. Oglesby (Joan), and Lamar Oglesby (Connie); 5 sisters, Jessie Jewell Oglesby, Joan Kirkland, Brenda Williams (Willie), Eddie Sue Douglas, & Geraldine Gober; 2 aunts, Georgia Oglesby & Mary Isom; & countless relatives & adoring friends.
Friends may call at the Stuart Mortuary, 2201 N. Illinois on Feb. 16th from 4-7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at New Life Worship Center, where Mary Janet was a member, 3425 Boulevard Place, on Monday, Feb. 17th where a 9 a.m. viewing will be followed by a celebration of Mary Janet's life at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to
in Mary Janet's memory.
