Vera M. Gerlach

92, Indianapolis, passed away on Sunday, February 23, 2014. Vera was born on October 21, 1921 in Gary, IN, to the late Harry and Elsie (Berkley) Phillips. She obtained her Bachelor's Degree from Purdue University and her Master's Degree from Loyola University in Chicago.

Vera was a social worker while residing in Lake County, IN. She then transitioned into school administration for Hanover Central High School, Cedar Lake, IN. She served as a Deacon for First Presbyterian Church in Crown Point; was an active member and volunteer for many years at Second Presbyterian Church, Indianapolis; was a member of The Daughters of the American Revolution; and was a member of both Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority as well as Tri Kappa Sorority, Crown Point and Carmel, IN.

Vera is survived by her loving daughter, Ann M. (Michael) Merkel; step-son, Jerry (Pat) Gerlach; granddaughter, Emily A. Criss; five step-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren.

Vera was preceded in death by her parents and husband Carl G. Gerlach.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in Leppert Mortuary, Nora Chapel . The funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. in Second Presbyterian Church, Indianapolis. Burial will be private for the family in Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville, IN. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Second Presbyterian Church, Indianapolis.
