Joan Henning King
91, of Indianapolis, passed into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior on March 22, 2014. She was born February 17, 1923 to the late Fred and Willa (Line) Henning in Indianapolis.
She lived in French Lick, Indiana for the first eight years of her life before returning to Indianapolis, where she attended Shortridge High School. She graduated from Butler University, where she served as President of her sorority, Delta Gamma.
She taught nursery school at John Knox Presbyterian Church. Her affection for children was also evident in her volunteer activities at Tabernacle Presbyterian Church, where she was a Bible school teacher for eight years. She was a 60-plus year member of the church, where she served as a Deacon and was on staff as a Parish Visitation Representative. Joan served as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels with her husband Malcolm S. King and her sister-in-law, Jane Brown King, for 26 years.
She is survived by her loving family: children, Fred S. King (Kathleen D.), David G. King (Maryann), Eric R. King (Anne), Holly S. King, and her grandchildren, Erin, Andrew (Melissa), Christopher (Cate), Brian (Anna), Jason (Rachelle), Julia, Kevin, and Daniel King, as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two sisters, Janet Cope and Patricia Boyd.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to her primary caregivers in her final years: Corlette Waller and Lina Natalie.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 26, at Tabernacle Presbyterian Church, 418 East 34th St. at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be on Tuesday at Flanner and Buchanan - Broad Ripple , 1305 East Broad Ripple Ave, on March 25, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. There will be an additional hour of visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will immediately follow at Crown Hill Cemetery.
