Fredrick "Fred" Alonzo Sauer, Sr.

Was born August 7, 1928 in Indianapolis, Indiana, and passed away on April 7, 2014 in Indianapolis at age 85 after a long illness. Fred served in the U.S. Army, following which he worked for the C.I.A. as a cryptologist. After his government service, he was an entrepreneur and become involved in a number of business enterprises, including Fred Sauer Insurance Agency, Stamp Vending Service, Inc., Refractory Engineers, Inc. and others. In later years Fred became involved with commercial real estate development. Following his retirement, Fred and his wife, Laura F. Sauer, maintained their permanent residence in Florida, most recently in Miromar Lakes. He was a long time member at the Country Club of Indianapolis, where he regularly golfed, played cards, and socialized with other members and friends. He was a private pilot for over 30 years, and a small plane enthusiast. Fred enjoyed buying, selling and trading airplanes. His favorite plane was a radial engine Cessna 195 "tail dragger" which he restored to like-new condition. He and Laura traveled extensively throughout North America by small plane.

Fred was preceded in death by his father, Henry Nathan Sauer, Sr., his mother, Lorene J. Sauer, and his older brother, Henry ("Hank") Nathan Sauer, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Laura, to whom he was married for 63 wonderful years in a union that was full of love, affection, joy and happiness. Fred is also survived by his younger brother, Robert D. Sauer. There are three children from the union of Fred and Laura: Fredrick ("Rick") Alonzo Sauer, Jr. (married to Janni), Jeffrey Collins Sauer (married to Jola), and Andrea Lorene Thomeczek (married to Charlie). There are eight grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.

Fred was often called "Freddy" by his close friends. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and his many friends. A private service will be attended by the immediate family.
