James R. Askren

84, died Tuesday, May 27. 2014. Jim was born on September 22nd, 1929. He attended Howe High School and Butler University. Jim graduated from the University of Cincinnati, and completed his masters at Miami of Ohio with degrees in Marketing and Business. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. Jim was President and owner of Askren Memorials, which had been in his family for 75 years. Among his many achievements, Jim was a member of and highly recognized by the American Institute of Commemorative Art. He was the director of the Monument Builders of North America and a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Washington Township Planning Committee, East Side Optimist, Broad Ripple Sertoma, the Barre Guild Advisory Board, and the Kiwanis Club. He attended Second Presbyterian Church, in which he was a member of Sages. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Carla; their three children, Susie Stark (Jay Wish), Nancy Russell (Brad) and Pam Marske (John); nine grandchildren, Katie Stark, Molly Campbell (Noll), Patrick Stark, Jess Stark, Lauren Russell, Sarah Russell, Matt Marske, Emily Marske and Joe Marske; one great-grandson, Beckett Campbell; and Hoagie the dog. Jim loved football, traveling, gardening, dancing with his daughters and his work. Most of all, Jim loved his family. Calling will be held at Second Presbyterian Church, 7700 N. Meridian St., on Saturday, May 31, 2014 from 10-12 p.m. in the Parlor, services will begin at noon in the Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Prime Life Enrichment Center, 1078 3rd Ave SW, Carmel, IN 46032.
