Helen Marie Hawkins

95, died peacefully on August 14, 2014 at Hooverwood, Indianapolis. She was born on August 31, 1918 in Cleveland, Ohio. Her parents, George August Schedat and Mary Grunau, emigrated from Lithuania prior to World War I. A graduate of Western Reserve University (now Case Western Reserve University) in Cleveland, she was named to the Phi Beta Kappa Society. She married Indianapolis native Hubert Hawkins in 1941, and they settled in Irvington following World War II. Throughout her life she was active in community affairs. She was a member and officer in numerous organizations, including The Irvington Historical Society, The Benton House Association, Marion County Children's Guardian Home Guild, Irvington Mother's Study Club, and Irvington Coterie Club. Her husband predeceased her in 1996. She is survived by three children, Arthur George Hawkins of Dallas, Texas, Phyllis Jean Coffin of Orlando, Florida and Martha Ann (Ray) Michel of Indianapolis and seven grandchildren, Lauraine, John, Andrew, Glenn, Craig, Danny and Brian and one great- grandchild, Nick. The family wishes to acknowledge the compassionate care she received from the caregivers at Hooverwood and St. Vincent's Hospice. Visitation will be on Monday, August 18 from 10:00 a.m. to Noon in Crown Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery , 700 W 38th Street, followed by a chapel service and graveside ceremony. In lieu of flowers donations in her name may be made to the Indiana Historical Society, Riley Hospital for Children, St. Vincent's Hospice , Hooverwood Guild or Benton House Association.
