Howard F. Hughes

71, passed away Saturday morning, December 10, 2011 at The Villages of Florida, where he enjoyed wintering. Howard was a resident of Nashville.

He was born November 4, 1940 in Kokomo to the late Robert M. and Mary D. (Pinegar) Hughes.

Howard was avid golfer, hiker, skier and bicyclist, having toured much of America and Europe enjoying these activities.

Howard was a 1958 graduate of Kokomo High School. He also attended Purdue & Butler Universities, and went on to earn an MBA from Indiana University in 1969.

Howard retired as the Director of Finance at Arvin Industries in 1979 after 10 years of service. He was the owner and operator of Sparkle Car Wash in Columbus from 1978 - 2005. He also owned locations in Franklin and Seymour.

Howard served as a member of many nonprofit boards in Brown County including: Big Brothers Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity, Brown County Community Foundation, Mother's Cupboard, Economic Development Commission, Brown County Rotary Club, where he was a Paul Harris Fellow, Brown County Literacy Coalition and the Career Resource Center. Howard was a major sponsor of the arts in the Brown County Schools, bringing Dance Kaleidoscope and the Indianapolis Opera to the schools for performances. He also served on the Dance Kaleidoscope board. Howard was a 25 year member of the Nashville United Methodist Church.

Howard is survived by his brothers: Gordon (wife, Marilyn) Hughes of Pueblo, CO and Donald (wife, Mabel) Hughes of Columbus; close friend: Marcia A. Flaherty of Richmond, VA; He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Other survivors related by choice not blood include: a daughter Susan Henry of Bloomington and a brother: Robert Bean of Brunswick, GA.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Meredith - Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center in Morgantown. A Celebration of Howard's life will be held in early January with times of services published soon in the Brown County Democrat and at http://www.meredith-clark.com.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent in honor of Howard to the Arts Program of the Brown County School Corporation, 357 E. Main Street, Nashville, IN 47448, or the Howard Hughes Fund for the Arts of the Brown County Community Foundation, P.O. Box 191, Nashville, IN 47448.
