John "Jack" M. Leslie

98, of Indianapolis, died peacefully on April 19th, 2012. He was born September 10, 1913, in Battleground, Indiana, to Martha Morgan and Harry G. Leslie. His father was the 32nd Governor of the State of Indiana. He was preceded in death by his two younger brothers, Richard and Robert, and his wife of 63 years, Katherine Leslie, and daughter-in-law, Jane E. H. Leslie.

In 1948, Jack, founded Leslie Brothers Co, Inc., a building materials supply company which today is Leslie Coatings. He retired in the mid-1980's.

Originally, from Tippecanoe County, his father moved the family to Otterbein in Benton County to take up farming in 1914 but after a year, they moved back to West Lafayette where they settled until moving in 1929 to Indianapolis to take up residency in the Governor's mansion. After a semester at Shortridge, Jack attended Howe Military School and graduated in 1933. He then attended Purdue University in West Lafayette where he developed a deep passion for all things Boilermaker.

Jack Leslie was a WWII veteran having served in the U.S. Army, 314th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, and participated in the Normandy Invasion onto Utah Beach, France. He was awarded two Purple Hearts as well as the Silver Star.

He was an avid golfer and had many friends in the organizations of which he was a member including, American Legion, Murat Shrine, Service Club of Indianapolis, Mystic Tie Lodge and Scottish Rite. He was a 33rd degree Mason. Jack was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity (Delta Delta) and was a regular at weekly alumni association luncheons. Anyone who knew Jack also knew of his love for Purdue. He was a fixture at Ross-Ade Stadium and Mackey Arena home games. He was a devoted, long-time member of the John Purdue Club. He was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church.

Jack is survived by his son, Thomas N. Leslie; daughter, Martha Leslie Brooks (John); three grandchildren, Katie Greve (Will), Andrew Brooks, and John Paul Leslie, and two great grandchildren.

Family and Friends will gather from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday April 23, 2012, and funeral on Tuesday April 24, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in the Leppert Mortuary, Nora Chapel . Jack will be laid to rest at West Lafayette, Indiana, Grandview Cemetery with a graveside service at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
