Barbara Ellen Shaffer
77, applied for the position of pianist to the heavenly choir on May 6, 2012. Barbara worked in local government for more than a quarter of a century, retiring in 1997. She was a faithful church pianist and organist, serving the Lord over 55 years at Broadway Baptist Church, Grace Memorial Baptist Church, Faith Baptist Church, and Shadeland Avenue Baptist Church. She gave freely of her time and talents teaching piano lessons, volunterring at the VA Hospital, and with various other Christian Ministries.
She was preceeded in death by her parents, Morse and Martha Eagen; brother, Richard; two sisters, Mary and Martha, and grandson, Joey.
She is survived by her brother, Bill Eagen; daughter, Marti Taylor; granddaughter, Ellen Ellis; one great-granddaughter; two great-great grandchildren; fiance, Bob Freeland; faithful furry companion Mandy; several nephews and nieces and a large host of friends.
Memorial contributions can be made in Barbara's memory to the Indianapolis Academy of Fine Arts for Scholarship Piano lessons. Even though she has played her final earthly note, others may learn and share in the joy she found in music.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 10, 2012 in Shadeland Avenue Baptist Church, 7427 E. 34th Street, with visitation from 1 p.m. until the time of service. Arrangements entrusted to Oakley-Hammond Funeral Home, Moore and Kirk Irvington Chapel .
