Shirley was born December 24, 1934, in Indianapolis, IN; the first child and only daughter of Bertha Marie Ahnafield Spencer and Edgar Eldon Spencer. She lived in Indianapolis, IN and later McCordsville, IN where she graduated top of her class from McCordsville High School. She attended Saint Paul Bible Institute in Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN and after finishing school relocated to Dayton, Ohio where she worked for the Dayton Power and Light Company and the Ohio Welfare Department. She moved to Lima where she became active in real estate development and eventually was a co-owner/operator of the Lima Discount Mart. She was a member of the Calvary Bible Church in Lima.
Shirley was a self-made woman in every sense of the word. She loved a challenge and saw every obstacle as an opportunity. She was a collector, a bargain hunter and a saleswoman extraordinaire. She traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe with Fran and their friends. In spite of the crippling effects of Alzheimer's, she was never one to complain or consider herself, in any sense of the word, a victim. Above all, Shirley loved the Lord and looked forward to going "home" to be with Him.
