Jerry Mark Colglazier

Was born April 23, 1930, to Winfield (Winnie) Waldo and Ethel Jessica Blackman Colglazier south of Salem, Indiana, in rural Washington County. From age 10 until he graduated from Pekin High School 1948, he was an active member of the Pierce Hustlers 4-H Club.

Jerry graduated from Purdue University (1948-52) with a Bachelors Degree in physics, chemistry and mathematics education. He met his future wife, Emma Louise Shonkwiler, and they were married Friday, March 13, 1953, in Lafayette, IN.

He served his country in the U.S. Air Force (1952-56), where he taught mathematics to basic trainees for two years and did educational statistics for the last 18 months of his enlistment. Following his discharge, he obtained a Master of Teaching Degree in Secondary Education from Harding University (Searcy, AR) in 1957.

He taught physics, chemistry and mathematics for a little over nine years in Franklin Central High School. He spent the summer of 1957 at the Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies where he was introduced to the then new High School Study Committee (PSSC), which he taught for more than 8 years. He obtained a Masters Degree in Physics Education from Purdue in 1963. During the summer of 1965, he received a Research Participation Grant to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York where he was involved in research regarding Electron Spin Phenomena. In November, 1965, he was invited to join the Indiana Department of Education as the science specialist. Before retiring in 1997, he spent 30+ years with the department as a science and general curriculum specialist, often recruiting, organizing and managing task forces to accomplish specific goals.

He taught Bible classes at every level from middle school through adult. Jerry spent several years as a deacon coordinating the educational program at the Franklin Road Church of Christ, and later served Southeastern Church of Christ as a deacon for outreach for over a year before serving as an Elder from 2000 to 2009.

Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Emma, and his brother Don Colglazier. Jerry is survived by five children, Carmen Elaine (Mike) McFarland of Newnan, GA; Pamela Sue (Randy) Matheny of Summerville, PA; Gregory Matthew (Lisa) Colglazier of Indianapolis; Renda Joy (Dirk) Nelson of Canyon, TX; and Lesha Rae Colglazier of Indianapolis; two sisters, Alice (Loren) Wilder and Ellen (Russell) Miller; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Southeastern Church of Christ, 6500 Southeastern Avenue; Visitation will be on Tuesday, October 23 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the church. Interment will be at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. Care has been entrusted to the Oakley-Hammond Funeral Home, Moore & Kirk Irvington Chapel.

Jerry's family wishes to thank the staff of the Altenheim Community where he received exceptional care.
