Michael Fry Obituary

Michael L. Fry

Mike Fry had only one main goal in life, and he achieved it every day of his life: He wanted to make people laugh. He attended Ringling Brothers Clown College, where he had the honor of being trained by three of the world's top four Master Clowns. He left the circus, and spent the next 8 wonderful years portraying Happy The Hobo on the wildly popular TV show, Happy's Place, (syndicated in 207 cities) from 1982-1990. After reconnecting with fans via facebook.com/happythehobo he learned how many lives he had touched, as his grown up fans confided how much Mike's daily shows had helped them through rough times in their lives.

After leaving the show, Mike turned his attention to another passion: inventing. He had his Big Light Bulb Moment when he asked himself: Why do fortune cookies have to be beige, bland and boring? That was the beginning of FancyFortuneCookies.com, which is still going strong in Indianapolis. Mike was always innovating and expanding his line of cookies, and his wife Erin continues his work. True to form, Mike had this to say about his company: "I don't bake cookies—I sell smiles—I think of myself as being in the joy business."

A lifelong learner and student of positive thinking, Mike began to share his hard earned wisdom and happiness secrets with others, giving workshops and doing speaking engagements all across Asia as well as closer to home.

Mike Fry never lost his sense of humor, even posing for a stunt photo on one of his hospital stays. He died on November 4 after a long illness, but he was wearing a funny hat—and that's no joke!

Mike waited a long time to marry, waiting until he found his soul mate. He is survived by his beloved wife, Erin Jump Fry, and his daughter, Ella Capri Fry; his sister, Deborah Scheiber and brother, Robert Fry. He was preceded in death by his parents, Darrol and Sylvia Fry.

In a befitting tribute, a joyful celebration of Mike's life will begin at 1 p.m., Saturday, November 10 at the Indianapolis Art Center, 820 East 67th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46220.

It is suggested that in lieu of flowers memorial gifts be made to the educational trust established for Mike's daughter, Ella Capri Fry. Donations will be accepted at any PNC Bank branch, Account Number, 4804273619.

Memorial Arrangements are entrusted to Bussell and Bell Family Funerals, Carmel. Please visit: http://www.bussellandbell.com, to share memories and read more about Mike's amazing life.

I went to school with Mike. We weren't close friends, and never talked, but he stood out to me because he was always so happy. And seeing him happy made me happy, even if it was only for a moment. That was his impact on me. He was loved by many people, and so are you, his beautiful family.

I grew up watching Happy The Hobo on channel 55 out of Ft Wayne, Indiana. I loved him and Froggy. I loved the good clean fun Happy did. And then years later when I found him on facebook I got to enjoy his great God given since of humor once again via his many fun loving statuses. He is missed by a lot of people. Ella, your Dad is amazing. I used to watch your Daddy's show in the 1970s on Super 55 TV. He would do silly things that made us laugh and forget about sad or difficult things. He was a breath of fresh air and always brought good and wholesome fun into our home. Thanks for sharing him with a world so much in need of love an joy. God Bless you Ella. Your Papa is bringing joy to others in heaven now. May the angels watch over you and your Mommy little one.

I grew up watching Happy the Hobo! He was funny and did really cool things on his show! Loved Froggy's Pad! My aunt worked as the secretary for many years at channel 55, and she was able to get my brother and I onto the show to meet him! My mother went to school with Mike at Huntington North also. I remember her telling us how he was such a "clown" in high school! I am so glad I got to talk with him once he got a Facebook page, to tell him how much he meant to us growing up! I am pleased to know that he lived a great, happy life and he was so fond of his wife and his daughter!! Thank u Mike for many years of memorable entertainment! May u soar on the wings of eagles and hope to meet u again! RIP

My daughter grew up watching Happy the Hobo. She was able to attend the live show once and competed in a fast talking contest becoming the resident TV star in our house. When Happy had some surgery he rode in a float in the Turtle Days parade and all the children in town dressed in "scrubs" to attend to him. Even indisposed Happy made our children Happy. He will be missed.

To the families and friends of Mike Fry, I am so sorry for your loss. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Mike holds a special place in the hearts of many and I am honored and blessed to have known him.

I first met Mike when I hired him for an event in Dayton, Ohio back in 1991. I wanted something fresh and new and had exhausted the entertainment in our area. Through my research I discovered Mike and hired him for many events over the next decade. He was the ultimate performer. Our audiences loved him and it was always a pleasure to work with him. I was always looking for new entertainers and my husband and I would go to other festivals and events and people would say, "Oh, he or she is great. “ We would say to each other "He's no Mike Fry." He set the bar high for entertainers. I became a stay-at-home mom and I haven't seen Mike in years, but “He's no Mike Fry” is still a catch phase my husband and I say to each other. Mike provided laughs and smiles to all and will be deeply missed. My mom recently passed away and I hope Mike is entertaining her now with his comedic antics.
Thank you Mike for all the laughs and smiles. I will miss you.

Erin, I can't tell you how sorry we are for your loss. It is certainly our loss as well. There is so much planning to be done for our class reunions and the highlight has always been getting to deal with you and Mike. I always look forward to ordering cookies because it means an opportunity to talk with you. I have had many dicussions with Mike over the years about classmates, reunions, high school, cruises, you, Ella and his illness. Every discussion left me laughing without fail somtimes to tears. From Mike and I our sympathy. From the Huntington North High School Class of 79, regrets in losing a classmate. As long as I am in charge, there will always be cookies at our reunion as that will mean Mike will be with us as well.

My dear Erin, words are difficult to find to express my heartfelt sorrow for you and Ella during this most difficult time. When I look at the photos of you, Mike and Ella, the love you shared is so evident and like no other I've seen. That love will never die but will always live on in your hearts and will provide you with the peace you need as you go on; he will now be your guardian angel and hold you both close as your journey continues. How lucky we were to have him in our family. God bless you both and wrap you in His loving embrace.

It was probably 20 years ago Steve and I met Mike through Jay Abraham and we always loved Mike's amazing zest for life. One of my fondest memories was about ten years ago. I was walking a half marathon to support the American Stroke Association on the big Island of Hawaii. After the race, I was down at the pool and there was Mike!!! How amazing to run in to him there! It was so fun and we had great conversations catching up in the beauty of the island. I first met Mike at Jay's passing out tons of Fancy Fortune Cookies. My very favorite Fortune Cookies were Cappuccino and Mike always made sure there were plenty around! How he will be missed. The room was always a little brighter with Mike in it. Know that he was loved and will be missed but so many. Lifting many prayers for you and your family and giving thanks for his wonderful life.

Mike inspired me and supported my goals and career in many ways over the past 25 years. He was a positive force in my life. Mike ingrained in me the notion to find the fun and the funny in people and in storytelling. I am truly shaken by his passing and grateful to have known such a vital life force.
Mike made the world a better place - - a Happy Place...
even he would guffaw at that one.
My thoughts are with Mike's beautiful family as you celebrate his incredible journey.
He's well-loved and deeply missed.

Erin, Ella, Deb and family. I think about all the times Mike graced my dinner table on the holidays and all the times I helped out at FFC and at his sports photo shoots. He was always so upbeat and happy, always had a joke - even in the middle of a hectic day of taking pictures for hours! He will be missed by so many people. I am thankful for the years that I was even a small part of his life and will always remember him. Erin and Ella - sorry I have not been able to meet you but I know you made Happy even happier! Deb, I know you will miss him so much -- God bless all of you. He's busy entertaining all of the angels!

I never went on Happy's Place, but my little sister and I watched him every day! It was our weekday routine to get off the school bus, run to the living room and turn on the tv :) He always made us laugh--the thing I remember most was his interactions with all the kids AND parents. He rarely censored himself, always pointing out the funniest obvious things, and his reactions to silly kids in line and the stuff he came up with to ask just cracks me up to this day! You knew he loved what he did! While I loved Happy as a kid, it's more as an adult that I can appreciate who he was. When I found out about his facebook page last year I was 1) amazed to see what he looked like with no Happy make-up...I didn't believe it, I had to YouTube a vid to hear the voice for proof! LOL! and 2) I realized what a unique, goofy, amazing, loving and positive person Mike was! I enjoyed his silly posts requiring us to have fun and ignore the rules :) So so needed in these times. I was very sad to hear of his passing, but sometimes we need the best to be our Guardian Angels <3 Through all the things he did throughout his life he has obviously left a trail of HAPPYness behind! What a lovely soul he is and may his adventures continue as we pay forward all he freely gave to us :)

November 8, 2012

May Michael "Happy the Hobo" Fry rest in peace. Even as a teenager in the 80's I loved his show. Happy appealed to all ages. I remember sitting down after school with my younger siblings watching "Happy's Place". It was good wholesome tv back then. Thanks for all you stood for Mike!

Like countless others I watched Happy's place everyday when I was growing up, and was on a couple episodes. I was deeply saddened by his passing, but will choose to remember how great of a person he was and his contribution to the happiness of young (and old) people everywhere. My deepest sympathies go out to his loved ones, may god comfort you in your time of need.

I didn't have the best childhood growing up but one of the fondest memories that I have was getting home from school and watching Happy the Hobo. Everytime I would see a post from Happy on facebook to this day, it always brought a smile to my face. Happy was a huge part of my childhood and he makes me think of simpler times! I got to go on the show several times and I just remember how much everyone loved Happy the Hobo and how he loved all of us kids too! I am so sorry for your loss but please know that his memory will live on forever in the hearts of so many that loved him!

I used to love to take my kids to Happy's Place. Happy always made me laugh so much. By the time I left channel 55, I had a horrible headache from laughing. I was sad when he left the show. I was glad when I found the Facebook page for Happy the Hobo. I could enjoy some of his humor again. I love to laugh and hehe definitely made me laugh a lot. I have just read all of the guest book signings and am in awe of the impact that one man had on so many. My children grew up with "Happy the Hobo" and I am very pleased to say that I approved of his show. Even back then, as parents, one had to be vigilant about TV viewing experiences. My condolences to the Fry family, and since there were 29 pages of signings when I read through them, there is alot of love being sent out to Erin and Ella. God is most 'Happy' right now to have a great angel in His presence.

Happy had such an impact on so many kids' lives. Kids now are really missing out on a great experience. As a child of the 80s, I grew up watching his show. I never got a chance to go to the show, but I watched it religiously. I did meet him, though. I was in a baton twirling group and one year after the Three Rivers parade, I had the chance to have my picture taken with Happy. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I will always cherish that photo. Happy will be sadly missed.

I grew up watching Happy's Place and that magical clown called Happy the Hobo. He brought a lot of joy to my childhood, and in my mind is an icon to children's entertainment. Later in life I found Mike Fry on Facebook, and though there was no clown makeup, the magic was still there. He was still passionate about bringing joy to others and enjoying it himself. You could feel from a distance, that this was a great man, who just loved to make people smile.

Thanks for the memories. You will be missed.

Today is not like cartoons were a few years ago, even in the 90's. You couldn't get online, or browse through Netflix. I was fortunate enough to have Happy's place in my life. A time where I could just be a kid, watch some of the best cartoons, and smile and laugh with Happy the Hobo. Every kid knew who he was, and I didn't know a kid that didn't like him. I remember "catching" my older brother continuing to watch him. I remember being envious of the kids that had a chance to meet him, or be in his show! I was so glad to see online, in the future, that Mike has done so much for people and continued to have such a giving and inspiring spirit.

May he live on in spirit; he touched so many lives.

I have many memories of Mike. A lot of them happened when I was just a kid. We roller skated together, and we had a really loud and painful fall. It was funny, even through the tears. I was so happy to "re-connect" through his online pages and participate in his fun contests. I won a contest once, and called to claim my prize. He strung me a long for at least five minutes, telling me that the contest was fake and I hadn't really won anything. When I was about to give up, he started laughing and said "this is Mike". It was so funny that he kept up the act for as long as he did, just to get a laugh. That just seemed to be the kind of guy he was. Genuinely happy, and devoted to helping others be happy as well. My heart is broken for this loss. The world needs Mike. I just guess that heaven needed him too. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

I had the opportunity to meet Mike as himself at a mutual friends New Years Eve party some 30 years ago. He was just getting on his feet after his Parade Accident. All of the party guests were having a fun time poking at each other. Mike was always the first one to "rescue" both guests of someone got too personal or took the jibe too seriously. It was as natural for him to do that as it was to make a group smile. He truly exhibited humanity to me at that time as well as his leadership examples to children. I believe no person could ever feel suffering in his presence. One crossing through my life path set a memory I will never forget because of the person he was in or out of the makeup.

as a child i loved watching Happy's Place. seeing happy the hobo on tv made me laugh and smile, i always wanted to be on his show when i was a kid. just to be able to do all the fun games with him and help with the name of the cartoon that was comeing on next. happy is in a great place now amoung all the other great clowns we have lost. so for happy i play "send in the clowns" and wish is wife and daughter lots of smiles and laughter as they remember who happy was.

I would always watch 'Happy's Place' when I would stay at my grandparents house. It was always a special treat because we didn't get channel 55 where I lived. One year Happy was part of a Fourth of July Parade in Gas City, and did a live show in the park afterwards. He balanced ladders and chairs on his chin,"hypnotized" a volunteer, and (most importantly to me) signed autographs and met with us kids! I always regretted that, through the course of being a kid, that autograph was lost. Ten years ago my mom somehow found his email address and asked if he could send her an autographed photo so that she could give it to me for Christmas(I was in my early 20's then). He very graciously fullfilled her request, and I got one of the best presents of my adult life. That autographed photo is still framed in my house to this day. It says ,"To a fan of long ago. Thanks for the laughs. I had as much fun as you. Get crazy, Happy ". I joined a local group of clowns that visited nursing homes, hospitals, etc. When in our training phase we were to see what clown fit us the best, whiteface, auguste, or hobo/tramp. I had decided what one I was going to be before we even started...a Hobo, just like my childhood friend, Happy. Happy will always hold a special place in my heart, not only because of the time spent watching and enjoying him, but because my memory of him is directly attatched to memories of being with Grandma and Grandpa Landfert. I now have a 5 year old son, Harry(who is named after Grandpa Landfert), and I share 'Happy's Place' with him thanks to Youtube. Thank you for the memories.

I remember watching the show everyday after school it was always great and Happy could always make you laugh. I always wanted to go meet Happy but I never managed to until after Mike had left and then it was as my clown persona. Happy was one of the main reasons that I took Clowning in 4 H because he made it seem so great. We need more people like him in the world.

I always loved watching Happy's Place when I got home from school. He would always make me laugh and make the day better in general. The friendship he had with Froggy also provided a good way to learn about having friends. Even as an adult I enjoyed following him on Facebook and reading his funny posts. He will be missed. I'm just sorry that my future kids won't have the same great programming when it comes time for them.

I would encourage my kids to watch just so I could. Loved the show and often wished I could occasionally stand in for Happy. The closest I got to that, though, was while making a delivery to the studio just before air time.

He made me and a lot of others happy. I will enjoy really meeting him when my time comes.

My kids loved Happys Place. They were glued to the TV every afternoon waiting to see what crazy thing Happy would do that day. It has been many years and yet everyone still remembers Mike Fry and Happys Place, that was the importance Happy the Hobo had in peoples childhood. He was a good man and will always be foldly remembered as a childhood hero.

I got to be on Happy's Place when I was in elementary school, and when I got to the front of the line and told him my name was Tyler, he asked in my mom gave me Tyler-ol when I was sick. To this day we use Tyler-ol in our house! I posted this memory on Happy's Facebook page last year, and it absolutely made my day when he wrote back to me! My favorite thing after school was to run home and watch Happy's Place. It just wasn't ever the same after Mike left. I don't think anyone could ever count the number of lives that Happy the Hobo made better! He will live on in our memories forever!

I never missed an episode of Happy's Place. On one of the shows he gave juggling lessons. Because of that I am able to juggle. I thought it was so cool when, as an adult, I found him on facebook. It was like I was a kid once again! I will always have great memories and miss him very much.

Dear Erin and Ella,

You and your family have my deepest sympathies. I was deeply saddened to hear the news of Mike's passing. Like many others I simply knew him as Happy the Hobo, a fun-loving and silly character that I grew up watching on television every day after school.

One of the highlights of my early childhood was being able to meet Mike in person and watch Happy's Place from the live audience. To this day my mother still has a recording of my appearance on the show, where after introducing myself to him, in teasing he repeated my name back pronouncing it "Undy"

Suffice to say that's one of the many reasons I attribute my love of comedy, harmless teasing, and all things silly to him.

Not only did I look forward to Happy's Place every day after school, I was lucky enough to be on the show 3 times! One of my favorite memories (and most nervous) is getting to say my joke on live tv with Happy himself! He was definitely a superstar to my generation, and he meant so much to us. I loved getting to know him a bit in recent years. Without social media it would not have been possible! He was always so friendly, funny, fun-loving, and I felt like every note and photo I shared mattered! Thank you so much Mike. You are so loved! Many blessings to you and your family.

You were loved by many for the simple joy you gave to them after a hard day at school. You showed us that it's okay to be ourselves even if it seemed funny or silly to others. My thoughts are with you and your family. RIP Happy!

I went on the show a couple of times as a kid. My mom worked at Fox 55 with Happy and he would ask her how I was doing occasionally. I was pretty sick for a while as a kid and when Mike asked my mom how I was, she told him I was sick, and Happy the Hobo called me to cheer me up. He told me to get better so I could go have fun being a kid. He also told me to keep studying hard so I could be smart when I grew up. I'm in grad school right now and when I think about giving up because the difficulty of my studies, I often think of his phone call as motivation to keep going.

Erin and Ella,
You don't know me personally but your husband/ dad provided me with hours of entertainment when I was a little girl while he was Happy the hobo.In recent years, his facebook page provided me with endless entertainment as well. What I will never forget about him is how much joy and happiness he spread to everyone! I will forever be grateful for the impact he's had on my life and will forever remember him even though we never met in person!

I remember always excited to watch Happy's Place after school. I can remember the times my mom would pick me up from school early and take my best friend, a bunch of babysitting kids, and myself and go be in the studio audience. Even when I did the joke "How do you count cows? With a Cowculator." He was the first one to laugh, as if I just said the funniest thing. RIP Mike "Happy". You will be dearly missed.

Happy's Place was a fun show for "kids" of all ages in the Fort Wayne area. Mike's personality brought happiness to many viewers. My son, Steve, worked with him at channel 55 and had nothing but good things to say about this entertaining guy. I'm sure Mike's "Fortune Cookie" reads something like this: "Mike, you have used your talents well, now sit back and let us entertain you, where you can truly be "Happy".
Our condolences to Mike's wife and daughter.

"Happy" was a big part of my childhood. I watched the show everyday and never missed while he hosted. I enjoyed the sillyness, and cartoons, and for 90 mins I was with a "friend". Ya see I had a rough spot when I was younger, my father was sick with Cancer so the mood in the house wasn't always the most cheerful, that is except when I watched "Happy's Place" then all was well. I watched it alone mostly, but the times I really cheerish are the times I spent watching with my father. We would sit together, laughing, and watching Duck Tails, and I cheerish that time we had, and I carry those memories with me daily. Thank you Mike "Happy" from the bottom of my heart for bringing joy to my youth in a time when it was few and far between. I'm very saddend to hear of your loss, and I know it will be a long time, if ever, that the world will have someone like you.

I'm sure it's been said already by many others, Happy was the reason why many of us upon jumping off the bus would run into the house, grab a snack and turn the tv on and settle in to watch him. How envious I was of those kids who actually got to go to his show.
Ella, your Daddy brought so many smiles to thousands of children's lives daily! As I'm sure you brought him thousand of smiles as well. :)

Mike,
It doesn't seem right calling you Mike...You filled my childhood with happiness, laughter and daily entertainment. I watched your show every day and was ecstatic when I got to meet you at the age of 7 (I'm thankful my dad recorded the show). You were an amazing juggler, original joke teller and down right genuine. I have many memories of you but a few of my fondest are as follows: Watching you perform a balancing act of a quarter on your nose while laying down..of course I tried it and I swallowed the quarter. I should have listened when you said: "Don't try this at home, I'm a professional of stupidity." Stupidity wasn't the word, you were crazy, fun and not afraid to show it. Your main mission in life was to make people happy. You didn't have to try hard, your smile was contagious. You befriended me on your page several years ago; my eyes lit up when I seen my favorite person 26 years later...who hasn't changed one bit. ~We joked about the show and I told him when I was on there, they ran out of autographed pictures and I was sad. Without hesitation, he asked me for my address, sent a copy of one from the 80's signed and dedicated to me. I felt 7 all over again! You see, we weren't just fans to him. We were people. People he wanted to know, get to know and be apart of our lives. I have never met anyone as genuine as Mike. Erin, my heart goes out to you. I know you know how special he is and always will be. Ella, your daddy is one of a kind. Happiness run through your veins as well. His legacy will run through both of you each time you smile and make someone else smile. I apologize for the length of this... Mike will always be happy and he would want the happiness to carry on... My heart will always ache for the loss of a truly great person. You will be greatly missed but NEVER forgotten, Happy Mike.

I grew up watching Happy's Place. I couldn't wait to get home from school to watch with my best friend, who died at a young age. Happy's Place was a part of my childhood that I could never forget. One of the things in life that I must "let go" to be in God's hands. Mike Fry, although I never met you in person, I thank you for being part of my life. You will be missed.

You gave so much joy to all ages, not just our children we brought to your show . Thank you for sharing love, joy and laughter to all of us for so many years, from Channel 55 days in Ft. Wayne 30 years ago for us right up to picking out dog choices. God bless all the Fry family.

I would rush home from school to see you, every day! Even when I was at home and sick, you were on... every day! My Girl Scout Troop from Bloomingdale Elementary in Fort Wayne got to come see your show live and meet you! That was the high point in my life up to that point!! You were always there for me, even in the summer. We would sneak inside the house to watch as long as we could, before we were caught and sent back outside to play. Thank you for being there for me and our community!
My thoughts and prayers go out to your wife and daughter. My hope for them is to have the strength to get through your passing.

I remember seeing the first episode of Happy's Place. I was afraid of clowns, but something about Mike (Happy) made me want to watch.
I was once on Happy's Place for my brother's birthday. I remember during the commercial breaks, and while the cartoons were playing, he would keep the kids entertained. He seemed to really care about each of us.
Prayers go out to his family during this time. He will look down on you and take care of you always.

I never got the chance to meet Mike, but I feel like he was my friend. As a child of the 80's, it was my after school ritual to watch Happy's Place. I looked forward to it every day! When I heard of his passing, it was like a piece of my childhood was gone. Growing up in the northeast Indiana/northwest Ohio region, he was a HUGE part of my life...and he can't be thanked enough! I send my thoughts and condolences to his family. May he live on in our laughs and smiles.
