Dorothea Smock Bowers
98, departed this world on January 19, 2013. She was born in Indianapolis April 20, 1914, the only child of Arthur and Marguerite Sahm Smock.
A long-time resident of the Broad Ripple area of Indianapolis, she moved to Cicero, IN for retirement, then to the Robin Run Retirement Community before moving to Mesa, AZ and the Springs of East Mesa. Raised in the Tabernacle Presbyterian Church, she was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church and an affiliate member of the Cicero United Methodist Church and participated in Women's Guilds, Bible Study classes, and Sewing groups.
In her long life, she had many interests and activities. She attended Butler University for three years and was a life member of Kappa Alpha Theta-Gamma chapter. She worked with Girl Scouts as a young woman and was a Boy Scout leader for her children. She was very active in a number of sewing and knitting circles. She was a member of Hamilton County 4H, the Cicero Library Guild and Friends for Friendless Animals. Known for her outgoing and positive personality, she will be sorely missed.
Dorothea was preceded in death by her husband, J. Frederick Bowers whom she married on March 21, 1943. She was also preceded in death by her son, David. She is survived by her sons, John Frederick, Jr (Susan Palmer) and Arthur S. Bowers.
Funeral services will be on Saturday January 26 at 11:00 a.m. at Flanner and Buchanan-Carmel, 325 E. Carmel Drive, Carmel, IN, where friends and family are invited to gather from 3:00-8:00 pm Friday, January 25. Burial will be at Crown Hill Cemetery.
