Sister Anne Doherty, S.P.

84, died on Feb. 3, 2013 at St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind. She was born in Indianapolis on May 6, 1928 to Patrick and Hannah Byrne Doherty and was baptized Teresa Anne.

Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Jan. 9, 1946 and received the name Sister Dennis. She earned a bachelor's degree from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, a master's degree in psychology and a PhD in clinical psychology, both from Catholic University of America. Of her 67 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered in education for 16 years in elementary schools in Indiana and Illinois. She served as principal and teacher at St. Anthony School in Indianapolis from 1958 to 1964. Having completed her graduate studies, she was a faculty member at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, Weston School of Theology in Cambridge MA and Martin University in Indianapolis. In Terre Haute, she served as staff psychologist at Vigo County Guidance Clinic and Director of Clinical Services at Katherine Hamilton Center. In 1981 she was elected general superior of the Congregation, an office she held for five years. Following this, she served as an advocate and consultant for the dioceses of Monterey, CA and Gary, IN. In 1996 she returned to the motherhouse, ministering as a clinical psychologist at Educational Family Services in West Terre Haute and also serving her sisters in a variety of ways. Beginning in 2006 she dedicated herself totally to the ministry of prayer.

Sister is survived by a sister, Eileen Munshower of Bozeman, MT, and a brother, James Doherty of Beech Grove, IN. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul M. Doherty and John P. Doherty and two sisters, Mary Jo Matthews and Sister Catherine Doherty, SP

The wake is on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Church of the Immaculate Conception with the Wake Service at 4:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial is on Friday, Feb. 8, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus presiding. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence.
