Dr. Lewis Christopher Lappas

91, Carmel IN, passed away February 21, 2013. Lew was born May 14, 1921 in Lynn, MA to Helen and Christopher Lappas. He graduated from Boston English High School and the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, where he was honored as valedictorian in 1943. Lew became a First Class Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II and served in the Pacific Theatre as a medic for the Navy and U.S. Marines.

Upon returning from military service, he continued his studies, receiving his Master of Science degree from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, where he met his future wife, Arlene R. Lappas. They married on August 28, 1949 and moved to West Lafayette, where he attended Purdue University. Lew received his Doctor of Philosophy from Purdue in January 1951 and became employed at Eli Lilly Research Laboratories as a research scientist where he worked for 33 years. Lew was a member of the Rho Chi, Phi Lambda Upsilon and Sigma Xi professional societies.

Lew and Arlene remained in Indiana, raising their family and enjoying travel and retirement together. He considered their marriage of 60 years and their family as his most precious joy and achievement. Lew was an avid sportsman, enjoying golf, sailboat racing, bicycling and swimming. He was a prolific painter and also found great pleasure in writing poetry. He is survived by his children, Dr. John (Kathleen) Lappas, Robert (Diana) Lappas, and Janet (Dr. Jeffrey) Huston and grandchildren Julie (Christopher) Termini and Suzanne Lappas, Brian and Jeremy Lappas, and Michael, Carol and Sara Huston.

Services will be held at St. Christopher Episcopal Church, Carmel, on Monday, February 25. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. Burial will take place at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to benefit the Dr. Lewis C. Lappas Memorial Scholarship at Herron School of Art and Design. Gifts payable to Indiana University Foundation, PO Box 663802, Indianapolis, IN 46266-3802.
