Oneida W. Sibley

Carmel IN, died on February 27, 2013. Neida was born on August 27, 1940 in Louisville, KY, to William Earl Watts and Lena Burnette Watts. She grew up in Muldraugh, KY, attended Meade County High, Furman University in Greenville, SC, and the University of Louisville. She married Lt. John L. Sibley, Jr. on April 28, 1962 in the Main Post Chapel at Ft. Knox, KY. John's post-military career took their family to Jacksonville, Gainesville and Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Atlanta, GA, Washington, DC, Spokane WA, Indianapolis IN, Allentown PA and back to Indy in retirement. During their 51 years together, Neida and John made friends at every locale.

She was active in volunteer work, especially in the field of music and was involved with Symphony Orchestra Associations in several cities. She was particularly proud of her leading role in the founding of the Schadt International String Competition for the Allentown Symphony Orchestra. The Schadt Competition is now in its 15th year and has produced several winners who are now renowned international musicians.

Neida enjoyed playing golf with friends at Woodland Country Club in Carmel and with her many close friends in the Kiawah Island, SC Governor's Club 9 Holers. She also had a lifelong appreciation for the arts, and enjoyed attending the symphony and theater with friends and family. She was active in the Contemporary Club on Indianapolis and the Players.

She was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis, as are her husband and Indianapolis-area children and grandchildren. Neida was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who doted on her six grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, John L. Sibley, Jr., sons, John III (Loretta), Columbus, OH, William Watts Sibley (Dawn). Indianapolis; daughter, Kathryn Oneida Zubler, Indianapolis; and grandchildren, Lela Sibley, Emily, Lena and Nathaniel Zubler, Indianapolis, and Faye and Rebecca Sibley, Columbus, OH.

A celebration of Neida's life will be held at Northminster Presbyterian Church on March 9 at 3:00 p.m., with a visitation in the church Gathering Place from 1:00 p.m. until service time. A reception will take place after the service at 5:00 p.m. in Woodland Country Club, Carmel, IN.
