Martin F. Abbert Obituary

Martin Frederick Abbert, MD

Was born November 6, 1936 in Rochester, N. Y. to Claude and Martha (Rodenbush) Abbert, deceased. He was raised on a hobby farm, which included orchards and vineyards, with his pet donkey (Brownie) and many other animals.

Martin graduated from Churchville Chili Central High School in 1954. He received Bachelors of Science degree from University of Rochester, N. Y. in 1958. He completed medical school at University of Buffalo, in N. Y. in 1962; a one year internship at Milliard Fillmore Hospital in Buffalo, N. Y. in 1963; and completed a three year psychiatry residency at Nebraska Psychiatric Institution in Omaha in 1966.

Martin married Barbara Morris Allen in August 1961. They had four children: Lance, Valerie, Sonya and Carson. Barbara died 1978.

After one year of Martin working at The Hastings State Hospital in Nebraska, he was called to military duty and served as Director of Mental Health Hygiene Consultant Service. He left the service with the rank of Major and returned to Hastings State Hospital, which had become Hastings Regional Center. He was named Superintendent and Regional Mental Health Program Director with clinical responsibilities for four communities' mental health centers. He left Hastings Regional Center to become Center Director of Riverwood Community Mental Health in St. Joseph, MI.

In October 1979 he married Glenda Snooks Steimle; adding two more children, Michael and Nancy, to his family.

Dr. Abbert moved his growing family to Alpena, MI and served as Clinical Director for North East Community Mental Health Center for eight years. There, the family enjoyed cross country skiing and many water sports.

After eight years in Northern Michigan he accepted a position as Medical Director of Dunn Community Mental Health Center in Richmond, IN. Three years later he accepted the Medical Directorship position at Adult & Child Mental Health Center in Indianapolis, IN. With the hopes of slowing down as he got older, he accepted a position as Staff Psychiatrist at Wabash Valley Hospital, now called Wabash Valley Alliance, in Lafayette, IN; he worked here until his death, April 4, 2013.

Martin and Glenda, thoroughly enjoyed their extensive travels all over the world.

Martin is survived by his wife of 33 years, Glenda; his three sons: Lance (Tanya) Abbert of Alpena, MI; Michael Steimle of Clio, MI; and Carson (Emily) Abbert of Portland, OR; and his three daughters: Valerie (Donald) Boersma of Grand Rapids, MI; Nancy (Warren) Emery of Greenwood, IN; and Sonya (Michael) Bargiel of Phoenix, AZ. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Ashley, Breanna, Ethan, and Adam Boersma; Airial Emery; Eleanor Abbert; and Acadia Bargiel.

A military burial will be in Coloma, MI; North Shore Memory Gardens. Memorial services at Smith Valley United Methodist Church on April 13, 13; at 6:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers; a memorial may be made to Smith Valley United Methodist Church, Greenwood, IN or St. Francis Palliative Medicine, Indianapolis, IN.
