Carter G. Kraege Obituary

Carter Glass Kraege

Passed away April 26, 2013 in Lacey, Washington. He was born May 22, 1919 in Yorktown, Texas, to Roland and Myrtle Kraege. He received degrees in both Pharmacy and Chemical Engineering from the University of Texas, Austin.

He served in World War II in the Navy as Chief Gunnery Officer aboard the destroyer escort USS Stanton, in the American, European, and Pacific theaters.

Carter met Grace Barbiere while on leave from the Navy, and they were married in New York on January 3, 1945. They moved to Indianapolis, where Carter began his career with Eli Lilly & Co. He managed the new production methods department at Lilly International, helping open plants around the world, and worked as a product development and production engineer.

Carter was a generous, loving, family-oriented person, always good-natured and kind. Widowed three times, he was a compassionate and steadfast caregiver. His devotion to others was followed closely by an unpretentious spirit of adventure and love of travel. He had a passion for sailing, and at age 75 he single-handedly piloted a 30-foot sailboat over 800 miles from North Carolina around the state of Florida. He also enjoyed golf, scoring two holes in one at ages 75 and 81 - on the same hole!

Carter and Grace raised their family in Indianapolis. Carter is survived by his sons, Richard Kraege (Anne) of Indianapolis, IN, and Don Kraege (Carol) of Olympia, WA; five grandchildren; Scott Kraege and Christine Froberg of Indianapolis, IN, Jill Barker of Topeka, KS, Grace Kraege of Olympia, WA, and Lisa Kraege of Brooklyn, NY, as well as ten great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wives Grace, Alyce, and M. Grace, and his brother, Roland Kraege, Jr.

A family service is planned for June in Indianapolis. Memorial contributions may be made to the , Central Indiana Office, 5635 W. 96th Street, Suite 100, Indianapolis, IN 46278; or Lawrence United Methodist Church, Community Outreach Ministries, 5200 N. Shadeland Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46226.
