Van Buren Cones
94, Fishers, passed from this life May 3, 2013. He was born July 4, 1918 in Indianapolis to the late Ben and Fanette Miller Cones.
Van graduated from Arsenal Tech High School and received his BSEE from Purdue University in 1940 and did his Post Graduate work at Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1942. He served his country in the U. S. Army Air Corp achieving the rank of Captain in WW II. Van married Eloise W. Knoll, September 8, 1951 and she preceded him in death, March 31, 2008.
Van was a Professional Engineer for Powers Regulator Co. from 1940 through 1952 and then was an Electronics Engineer for Naval Avionics for 32 years, retiring in 1984. Listed in Who's Who in the World he achieved several patents throughout his life time, one of which was the reduced-brilliance headlamp for daytime driving to help reduce automobile accidents, which was patented over 30 years ago and was eventually introduced by Volvo. These headlights are used in automobiles worldwide today.
Mr. Cones was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, a member and Past Commander of the Irvington Post #38 of the American Legion. He was also a member of Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity and the Indiana State Professional Electrical Engineers (ISPEE).
Visitation will be Sunday, May 5, 2013, (TODAY) from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Fishers-Castleton Chapel , 9900 Allisonville Rd., with funeral services Monday at 10:00 a.m. at Shirley Brothers Chapel.
Van is survived by his loving daughters, Diane C. Serban (John), and Anita S. Cohee (Stanley); six grandchildren, J. Nick Serban (Melissa), Stacey Cohee Walden (Jesse), Jeff Cohee (Jennifer), Erin Cohee, Daniel and Michael Serban; two great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Albert and Chuck Cones. http://www.shirleybrothers.net
