William J. "Bill" York
William J. York, 80, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2013 surrounded by loved ones. He was born on May 30, 1933 to the late Rev. Aaron Wilbur and Marie (Crick) York in Espanola, New Mexico.
Bill served in the United States Army after graduation with a Bachelor's Degree from Indiana Central College (University of Indianapolis). He later received his Master's from Butler University.
He taught English in Indianapolis Public Schools and retired after "the best 14 years" at Martin University.
Bill loved music, and sang at church and with the Indianapolis Symphonic Praise Choir. He loved gardening and wood-turning as hobbies. With a warm sense of humor, he was quick to tell a joke or make a witty comment that would bring smiles to the faces of those around him. He was a mentor and role model to many students, educators, family members and friends throughout his life, and always had time to lend an ear and offer heartfelt advice when asked. He was pleased to have influenced and encouraged young men during his time as a Cub Scout Pack Leader. He loved his family and his Lord with steadfast dedication. He was a loving husband, father, brother and grandfather, and he touched the lives of family, friends and many colleagues.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Doris J. (Liechty) York; sons, Kevin D. and Eric B. York (Teresa) both of Coatesville, IN; daughters, Lynnette York Dallas (Jimmie) of Anderson, IN and Erin Renee Ringle (Mike) of New Hope, MN; brothers, Marvin Eugene York (Teddi) of Monroe, GA and Lowell Ray York (Becky) of Raleigh-Durham, NC; sister, Carol Louise Haughton of Lebanon, IN; 21 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and many cherished friends and family members.
The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 28, 2013, at Flanner and Buchanan - Washing ton Park North , 2706 Kessler Blvd West Drive Indianapolis IN 46228. Funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. Burial will be at Washington Park North Cemetery.
