Nellie Fern Clayton

At the age of 94, passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus early Sunday morning, September 1, 2013. She was a warm and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Her warm embraces and words of encouragement will be greatly missed by all who treasured her. Fern, as she was known, married Elson Lucian Clayton on October 11, 1942 and last year they celebrated 70 years of marriage.

Fern graduated from Dugger High School and attended the Terre Haute School of Business. She worked at the Sullivan County Court House and the Indianapolis State House before her marriage. She was a charter member of Fountain Square Church of Christ. She loved God, family and friends, flower gardening and watching the birds and squirrels feeding in her backyard. She was an avid reader and wrote poetry, songs and short stories.

She was preceded in death by her father, John Wesley Walters; her mother, Nellie Cordelia Neal Walters; her step-mother, Clara Bateman Walters; two brothers, Russell and Garland Walters; three sisters, Geneva Blume, Violet Blume and Esta Shepherd; and a granddaughter, Anne Elizabeth Clayton. She is survived by her husband, Elson Lucian Clayton; her five children, Carolyn (David) McVicker (Winter Haven, FL), John (Yvonne) (Cicero, IN), Robert (Cicero, IN), Richard (Alexandria, VA) and Linda Snodgrass (Indianapolis); and a sister, Eva Clay (Canton, OH). She was blessed with nine grandchildren; Theresa Mason (Clermont, FL), Joshua (Nikki) Clayton (Indianapolis), Jeremy Clayton (Sheridan, IN), Ross (Anne) Clayton (Zionsville, IN), Amy (Aaron) Rickleff (Indianapolis), Brett (Aubrey) Clayton (Westfield, IN) and John, Andrew, Jeffrey and Stephen Snodgrass (Indianapolis). Fern has 11 great-grandchildren, Emily Mason (Clermont, FL), Sophia and Briar Clayton (Zionsville, IN), Sam, Mac, Bennett and Ollie Clayton (Zionsville, IN), Caroline and June Rickleff (Indianapolis), and Roman and Atticus Clayton (Westfield, IN). The family wishes to express their appreciation to Ruthanne Heinzmann and Fern's many special friends for their loving care and support during these difficult times.

Visitation will be Thursday, September 5, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Thompson Road Chapel , 3333 E. Thompson Rd. with funeral services Friday at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Greenwood, IN.
