James Shields Secrest

90, formerly of Casey, IL, passed into the presence of The Lord at 2:15 a.m. on Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at Westside Nursing Center, Indianapolis, IN. He was born July, 9, 1924, in Casey, IL, the son of Aldrich Logan and Hazel (Shields) Secrest. On July 5, 1946, he married his wife of 65 years, Evelyn June Kannmacher, who preceded him in passing on June 27, 2012.

Survivors include their daughter, Roberta Secrest, of Avon, IN, a cousin, Joe Cunningham, of Newton, NC, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and infant sister.

James was a WWII veteran. He proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Army being stationed for over 2 years in the Philippines, New Caledonia, and Yokohama, Japan. He was a member of the State of Illinois Civil Defense and the Casey VFW Post 5672.

James was a member of the Martinsville Bible Church for over 50 years. He was employed by the Ohio Oil Company and the Forest Oil Corporation. In 1994, after 22 years of service, he retired from Eastern Illinois University as an equipment operator for the grounds department.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 17, 2014 at the Greenwell Funeral Home, Martinsville, IL, with Rev. David Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in the Ridgelawn Cemetery, Martinsville, IL with graveside military rites by the Martinsville American Legion. Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Thursday prior to the service at the Greenwell Funeral Home, 30 N. Washington St., Martinsville, IL.

Memorial donations may be made to the Martinsville Bible Church, 509 N. Ridgelawn Rd., Martinsville, IL 62442.
